Castel del Monte is an astounding, if not a bit perplexing, work of medieval architecture best seen in person. Perched 540m above water, the views of Apulia from the Castel are breathtaking (bring your camera!) I second this as a great place to visit if you are in the region. The countryside is unspoilt, pine woods and fields stretching as far as the eye can see. On the hilltop you can see for miles around. Castel del Monte is about an hour from Bari on a small hill in the plains of western Puglia, not far from the Basilicata border. You can see this unique structure for many miles in every direction. The castle was built in the 1240's by Frederic II who used this part of Italy as one of his favorite hunting grounds.... more
