The most important old church - monument in bari. In the old town, close to the sea and the touristic port, very easy to reach by foot

These are not as elegantly furnished as many of the Catholic churches although a lot of this can be put down to al but a small pieces of the fresco that would have been painted all around the church. The alter and the canopy over the top are worth seeing as is the crypt dedicated to St Nicholas. Get a... More

We entered this church twice on the same trip. The first time, we were roaming the streets aimlessly and just happened upon it. We found it fascinating starting with the square in which it was located....very lively with tourists from all over, pedi-bikes. The 2nd time we saw the church with a guide. This made a tremendous difference. There is... More

Even if you had no clue of its importance and historical value, Basilica di San Nicola will hold you captive with its sheer architectural beauty. Its imposing facade and solid structure combined with exquisite design (inside and out) is so beautiful. I couldn't help but loiter there for over an hour just looking at it. Then when you think about... More

Conveniently situated near Via Venezia this impressive building houses the bones of St.Nicholas in the beautifully lit crypt. The interior is plain and simple and the church is in the care of Dominican monks. There are some lovely examples of artwork and an imposing statue of St.Nicholas. The Basilica complex houses a gift shop and toilets among other facilities.

When in Bari, a visit to this historical basilica is a must. A walk through the winding, narrow streets leading to it allows you to go back in time!

Bari had is moment of glory during the crusades. The church of San Nicola was build using the structure of the former palace of the Byzantium governor, the Catapano. It was built to host the tomb of San Nicola, whose bones sailors from Bari stole in today's Turkey at the the end of 11th century. So the church is more... More

A Norman basilica, plain exterior placed on the edge of a square, so able to view it well. Not many visitors, which was good for us. Was interested that part of St Nicholas are buried in the crypt, that is what we were told in Turkey, where supposedly other remains are there. I believe was a wonderful caring and helping... More
