Once you have negotiated the beggars at the door this is quite an impressive church. The crypt areas are not much but the main part of the church is very impressive.

Ancient basilica housing the bones of St Nicholas. Upstairs is Catholic and austere. The crypt is Orthodox and buzzing. There's plenty to see on both levels. Well worth a special journey.

Beautiful cathedral! Went two times to visit it. Once there was a service in the tomb of San Nicola, very impressive. Second time there was a wedding, loved it to see it!

Although known as the model for Santa Claus, Saint Nicholas is the patron saint of sailors, merchants, archers, repentant thieves, children, pawnbrokers and students. Most of his remains are kept here in Basilica, the symbol of Bari and the pilgrimage site for centuries. Built more than 900 years ago, it is very well preserved with some nice artefacts and art... Bari was the first stop on our cruise, and we made sure to find this cathedral. Definitely make your way to the basement where the crypt is located.

The Church was nice and ornate. It had a separate area to purchase souvenirs. Nothing spectacular about it but something to see if you're in the area.

Its a massive church of Norman style architecture, with a second story on the side aisles and a very nice ornamental painted ceiling. The lower level hosts the relics of St. Nicholas. The church and relics is the pride and joy of Bari and you cannot say you have been to Bari if you have not visited the Basilica di... More

We spotted this Basilica from the city wall and worked our way back to it. It is truly impressive. The remains of frescos decorate the front, the baroque ceiling is astounding. Do not miss the crypt where you will find the tomb of St Nicholas.

Visit the centro storico of Bari. The splendid Basilica di San Nicola was built in 1089 to house the relics of St Nicholas of Myra. View its facade from the Lungomare; what a sight it must have been for medieval seafarers and Crusaders. San Nicola is deservedly better known than the Cattedrale in Bari. Look out for the episcopal throne,... More
