I spent a half day tour with Alvise and enjoyed my time with him. He tailored a tour through the back streets of Venice. It was quiet and peaceful. His knowledge of Venice is encyclopedic and he was generous with his insights into Venetian culture, politics and history. We watched Venetians go about a normal day, before passing through the... We had an in-depth tour of St. Marks and the Doges Palace with Alvise and were totally engaged with his presentation. There is no end to his knowledge on every topic. He had answers to our many varied random questions but also expertly kept the tour on point so we would not miss the key facts about Venice--historically and socially.... More

We had one full day in Venice and contacted Alvise regarding a personal tour. He was very prompt in his correspondence and recommended an excellent itinerary. He met us at our hotel and we began our day on foot. He whisked us through the crowds, showed us the highlights with just enough information plus was fun to spend the day... More

After much review I booked two half day tours with Alvise. The email communication was great and he was extremely helpful in planning our two days in Venice before we left on our Mediterranean cruise. I was disappointed when Francesco introduced himself as Alvise's brother and informed us he would be conducting the tour in place of Alvise. However Francesco... More

Venice for the uninitiated is an essence of Italy shrunk to a couple of thousands square meters. Visitor car parking is nicely done in one of the parking buildings on Isola Nuova (Tronchetto) with easy access to main atractions via boat. Be ware of "private taxi boats", the public transport is efficient (cheaper and only marginally slower). St. Mark Square... More

Venice has so much to offer so take your time and enjoy. We were on a Globus Bus tour that covered all of Itay. Even though it was busy it was well worth it. Our guide Lino arranged all the tickets in advanced and the group bypassed the lineups. Unfortunatly in Italy the lineups are terrible if you are not... More

I took several tours with Alvise of Venice a la Carte when I visited Venice for the first time as part of a small tour group in September. Alvise was very knowledgeable about Venetian history, architecture, and art. He was patient with answering lots of questions, seemed to genuinely enjoy teaching others about his city, and offered some interesting insights... More

Alvise's vast knowledge of the history and symbolism of art and architecture of Venice provided an invaluable experience. He is patient and provides the type of detailed information that creates a sturdy bridge to the past.

Staying in San Marco

Neighborhood Profile
San Marco
The most famous sestiere (district) in Venice has one of the world's most famous squares, St. Mark's (Piazza San Marco). Anchored on one end by the basilica, clustered around it are restaurants, museums, shops, orchestras playing in the square, pigeons, the grand pink Doge’s Palace (Palazzo Ducale), the soaring campanile bell tower, an astrological clock tower, plus gorgeous cafes and restaurants like Florian and Quadri. Piazza San Marco is beloved by Venetians themselves. They book a table anytime, which offers a buffer from the fray. This grand outdoor drawing room attracts Venetians for a stroll too, especially late in the afternoon when the hoards of daytrippers thin out. It's simply a grand place to meet.
