What a disappointment, the staff were apathetic, the drinks poor quality and the overall atmosphere lacked charm. It's a real pity as rather than immersing in the history and celebrity clientele of years gone by, you are congratulating yourself in being another idiot paying the absurdly overpriced Bellini or Gin and Tonic.

As I am a great fan of Ernest Hemingway this was a must for me despite the mixed reviews. The place is rather difficult to find. It is tiny and staffed by hordes of frankly rude waiters. The decor is very nice and the inventory is of a high standard (nice tablecloths, nice cutlery and crockery and glasses). As in... More

Had to go for a tick off the bucket list. Surly looking staff in what was probably a very authentic bar. The chairs and tables and everything about the bar looked so basic maybe it was trying to be original. I ordered a Gin and Tonic and a Belini, both arrived in the tiniest of glasses. The G&T was just... More

I booked a table for dinner for the first night of a special visit for my wife and I and then having read the other recent reviews I was a little apprehensive. All we can both say is our visit was memorable, wonderful and worth every penny If all you do go for a drink then maybe it is expensive... More

Don't go here unless you want to just throw money away. Yes Harry's bar is a Venice 'must do' and don't they know it. It's scruffy and the staff are just rude! The cocktail menu - designed for tourists - has extortionately priced and frankly disgustingly tasteless drinks. We had Bellinis. They were being made in full view en masse... More

Right around the corner from Piazza San Marco, just down the Calle Vallaresso is legendary Harry’s Bar. Pass through its bronze beveled-glass doors and take a step into the past. Not the Venice of Marco Polo or the Doges, but of about a hundred years ago, when European travel was not easily accomplished, and what travelers wanted more than anything... More

I was going to give this very negative write up but has second thoughts. This is not really a place for “tourists”. It is more like a private club for notable wealthy locals and invited guests. The drinks are expensive and not that well made. I spoke with an ex-waiter who admitted the food was good but not great. It... More

This was unique and you must make a reservation. If you want glitz and glamour Harry's isn't it. Small. Cramped. Old. Unspectacular. Expensive. BUT.... When the elderly owner, Mr. Cipriano, stops by to shake your hand and then introduces you to some of his author, artist and photographer friends eating fried artichoke hearts at the next table then you know... We had read the reviews but still booked the restaraunt knowing that we would probably pay the price and did we !, The food was ok but for the price , it was over the top, 27 euros for a plate of lettuce leaves and average 69 euros for a main course and the drinks were expensive. We have been... More

If you imagine Hemningway sitting in the bar, then order a Bellini before having the wonderful Carpaccio. All inventions of Arrigi (Harry) Cipriani. Either in Venice or in New York. And don't forget the amazing deserts!

Staying in San Marco

Neighborhood Profile
San Marco
The most famous sestiere (district) in Venice has one of the world's most famous squares, St. Mark's (Piazza San Marco). Anchored on one end by the basilica, clustered around it are restaurants, museums, shops, orchestras playing in the square, pigeons, the grand pink Doge’s Palace (Palazzo Ducale), the soaring campanile bell tower, an astrological clock tower, plus gorgeous cafes and restaurants like Florian and Quadri. Piazza San Marco is beloved by Venetians themselves. They book a table anytime, which offers a buffer from the fray. This grand outdoor drawing room attracts Venetians for a stroll too, especially late in the afternoon when the hoards of daytrippers thin out. It's simply a grand place to meet.
