We arrived in time for the 9.30 opening butwere told there was a delay because of a funeral. So we sat in the little cfe over the bridge and saw the coffin and flowers being loaded onto the boat which then left. I was completely taken aback by the size of the place. The Madonna and child on the right... more

My wife and I visited Venice twice in 2008 and on our second visit we engaged that services of a local guide and asked that he alter his company's set itinery to end our three hour walking tour at dei Frari. It was a stunningly beautiful way to end our tout of Venice. The art history that resides in this... more

We raced across Venice (on foot) just before we had to leave for the airport to see this church. Got there in plenty of time (25 mins before the closing time in our chorus pass brochure) only to find a clerk refusing entry to us and several others. On the feeble grounds that last admissions were a very mean 30... more

The huge church of The Frari- the Brothers- dates from the 15th century, and was founded by the Franciscans. It contains some very important works of art. Firstly, on the high altar, Titian's Assumption, which is quite magnificent. Secondly, a startling statue of John the Baptist by Donatello. Thirdly, a beautiful altarpiece of the Madonna with Saints by Venetian master... more

So much loved this place that it is in the top three of the churches I saw in Italy. It was lovely and I would definitely recommend it. Also agree with the other writer regarding seeing the few main attractions there in Venice then get out and just walk around and see what you come across. Go see St Mary... more

The other reviews do not do justice to this remarkable hidden jewel of Venice. The sculptures, crypts, magnificent paintings and the haunting edific of the black slaves over a doorway remain in my thoughts. The church is magnificent , but the art work - stunning. Definitely a MUST see. more

Located in the middle of the left bank of Venice. One of the larger churches in Venice. Does allow photos to be taken (no flash allowed). Was established in the 14th Century by the Franciscan Friars. Very tall ceilings. One of the off chapels, has an "alter of relics". Has several small altars and chapels. Wonderful wood carvings surrounding pews... more

My young adult children and I were in Venice earlier this month. We visited I Friari, as it is called by the locals, because my daughter had studied Titian's Assumption of Mary this year in Art History. We arrived just shortly before a mass so because we would only be allowed in for a limited period of time, we were... more

The interior of this church is not to be missed, plus if your visit to Venice is on a Sunday this is one of the few churches open, as is the Scuolo next to it. more

My husband and I went on a 9 day Rome/Florence/Venice trip last month. Perhaps it was that this was the last church we visited on our exhausting, unforgettable stay, but the Frari church remains my most unforgettable church. I am not Catholic, but I am a Christian. This church held such a feeling of peace, I could have stayed there... more
