Sadly, it was packed when I went, and everyone was ignoring the instructions not to take pictures, so stopping every few feet, blocking the roped off pathway, and generally behaving like heathens. But the ceiling of the basilica is breathtakingly beautiful!

Understand that this was the private chapel of the Doge, and designed to reflect the power and wealth of Venice, and you see the place through the right lens.

The basilica is astonishing. Everything is mosaic..tiny little pieces that are gathered into making this beautiful basilica. Don't miss this attraction when you are in Venice. It is worth seeing. The basilica is free but there's a fee that you will have to pay if you want to go up to the balcony of the basilica. It is worth it,... More

Words can't describe Saint Mark's Basilica in my opinion. I think it is well worth a visit. Beautiful work and calming in my opinion.

As you walk in, just look up and take your time enjoying the golden mosaics. It will literally floor you. Go early in the morning on a weekday, when the weather is foul... in that way you can see it well lit in its splendor.

this is the second time i have visited St Marks and the first time i have paid to go up to the balcony to see the horses - it is well worth the money. The view from the internal balcony towards the altar is fantastic and as it was not busy when we visited we had time to stand and... More

The roof looks like it is made out of gold pieces, and I can imagine it being magnificent back in the day. You can pay to walk to the top of the Church to go outside. Great views of the square and the water. Take your camera.

I'd give the building a 5 star, but it gets 3 only because the way it is set up for visitors inhibits the ability to enjoy. The golden mosaics are unique and breathtaking and it's free to go in. Once you are inside, there is a small walkway going around the perimeter, making you uncomfortable stopping and looking up at... More

It was a Sunday and the Square was packed so we had to join a "crocodile " to see through the Basilica. It is very dark inside and cavernous and because of the crowds we idn't have much of a chance to examine it. However on the outside is the beauty of this building with its dome and finials, its...
