There are the Caravaggio paintings and all the photos you've seen but really this is one of those must visit places on earth.

Take a ride in the Vaporetto and have your camera ready. You will have plenty of opportunities for great looking pictures.

However, it's so crowded! And the gondola rides are expensive! I honestly had more fun roaming around next the river than riding down it!

It was a "must do" on our list and to experience the Grand Canal was special, very crowded when we went in July so if you dont like crowds go in the later months as i will in the future.

So easy to get about on the water bus(vaporetto). Get the 3 day ticket if doing a weekend...it's worth it. You will see loads of important bits on the grand canal

The best way is to take vaporetto (water tram) and take several rides along it and admire its beauty. The vaporetto no 1 is the slowest one with the biggest number of stops, no 2 goes a little quicker. If buying tickets... More

A lot going on and was nice to sit and watch the comings and goings during the day and night. We did have very close encounters with a rat, though he was friendly. This may upset some people.

Take line 1 of the public transport from the train station to St Marks square. It's 7 euros and you'll explore all the canal and the sites. We used Rick Steve's free audio guide that accompanies this specific route and it was really great!!

Of course, Venice is amazing! The pictures don't really do it justice and it is so fun to see the site come to life before your very eyes. it's much larger than you imagine and much easier to get lost on the side streets than you think. Definitely do a water taxi, avoid busy times if possible as the crowd... More
