As Venice is car-free, most people will travel on the canal during their stay. We arrived at Treviso, so transferred to the train station then took a water taxi to our hotel. 70 euros for a 20 minute ride along the canal. Expensive but worth it. Driver wanted another 30 euros to offer a commentary - rip off as we... More

Its provenance is well known. The Grand Canal is beautiful and can be traversed by foot, gondola (very expensive; 80 Euros before 7pm and 110 Euros thereafter, for 35 minutes, which is ample), water taxi, public transportation, etc.

Very, very busy!! When we arrived at the station the Orient Express was waiting to leave it was a fabulous start to a wonderful day. The Gondola trip costs €80 euro wether there are 2 or 6 of you but you've gotta do it. We got the vaporetta to the centre and worked our way back to the station at... More

A trip to Venice has to include a trip down the grand canal whether on a gondola, water taxi or vaparetto. It is so beautiful at sunset and at night the lights are lovely.

It was very nice to see all the architecture on the Grand Canal. It was a bit busy with all the boat traffic and we didn't really have anyone with us to tell us what all we were looking at. Get someone who knows the history and can tell you what everything is along the way.

I highly reccomend visiting the grand canal atleast once in your life time! It is beautiful. The bustling canal is best experienced on a gondola, however, there are water buses which are a cheaper option but not as relaxing! Up and down the canal the men that control the gondola's sing. It is an amazing place to visit.

Amazingly picture perfect. You can follow the course of the canal across little bridges in back streets which have shops places to eat and quiet squares, hidden churches. The famous Realto bridge looks great across the canal but the shops on it are a bit of a disappointment

Went on a Thomsons trip from Croatia to Venice. Be careful on what you pay for. The trips are run through an independent company which I don't have an issue with but there are no Thomson reps and there are potential hidden costs. From the Venice mooring you can walk to St Marks Square with an escort or get the... More

Needless to say that grand canal is the primary thing that any one would want to see in venice.... but, once you get down from the railway station what you see is this grand canal.... buy tickets for the ACTV waterbus(operated by government) immediately once you get down for the number of days you are going to stay in venice.......
