The Grand Canal is the most important waterway in Venice. You can visit it in a number of ways. You can travel on it, walk alongside it or cross over it. Do all three for the best perspective. The three bridges crossing the canal are all different. Accademia is the only wooden structure and is interesting for that reason alone.... More

To think that the waterway is the ONLY mode of transport is fab, & to see these people operate it is brilliant!!

I agree that you can see the sights via water taxi with tons of other people, but if you're already in Venice, it's worth it to take a gondola ride. Our gondolier sang and told many interesting tidbits about Venice. It IS expensive, but it's such a quintessential Venice experience. Either way - the Grand Canal is fabulously gorgeous.

There is no way to visit Venice without taking a gondola ride on the Grand Canal. I think this may have been the highlight of my children's trip, right up there with feeding the pigeons at St. Mark's.

We did get a private taxi to tour the canal and get a better glimpse of what goes on there... It is busy, crowded and a must at least once. Its the way to visit and see Venice from the water.... Totally different than walking the streets full of people and stores.

What a beautiful spot in Venice. It is always busy - just take the time to absorb the whole experience. Just grab a coffee somewhere along the canal and enjoy the view

Venice is a surreal vacation spot (in a good way). The whole character of the city is captured when you spend any time on or around the Grand Canal. A must see!

The grande Canale is as you would expect very busy with water buses ,water taxis ,private launches and gondole but still a fascinating sight and if one catches it at the right time exactly as Canaletto painted it

Having a coffee or glass of wine and watching life on the canal is a must when in Venice. The water buses, taxis, pleasure boats, working boats and of course the gondoliers, and generally watching life go by was one of the highlights of the holiday
