There isn't much to say except that one should definitely spend a bit of time ON the Grand Canal, not just looking at it or crossing it. Whether a water taxi, gondola, or vaporetto (the "water bus"), make sure you spend some time going up and down the Grand Canal. It's nice if you have a Guide who can point... More

Travelling on the grand canal by boat, you get to see amazing architecture and many smaller canals. Great to do just for the photos.

Loved catching the water taxi and sitting to enjoy this! We went in the evening and it was magnificent! Much cheaper than a gondola ride!

We took a vapo up the canal from St Mark Square to Rialto Market. This cost next to nothing and if you wait for one with an open front you get the best view ever. A Must to do in Venice

As well as travelling up on the Vaporetto (same as a bus in Venice) during the day to see the building and this bustling canal, it's worth doing some of the trip by night - we went from San Marco to the Rialto bridge then walked back. Nice experience on a warm night.

An early morning walk along the Grand Canal is a wonderful way to start your day - lots of activity as workers make their way on the local ferries and Cruise liners begin their journey to the Port

This is the major waterway, so the morning is filled with local businesses trolling up and down the canal doing deliveries, early in the morning. It is such a nice site, later on it is the vaporattis and the gondolas and the water taxi. it is a photographers dream. Better than you imagined.

Get a vaporetto card and use it as often as you can. Different times of day, different directions, different spots on the boat.

We got a 3 day vaporetto pass and loved the Grand Canal! The pass makes it easy to see everything! Interesting and haunting at night as well!

I loved seeing the very fancy mansions and museums on the Grand Canal. The vaporettoes are convenient but the tour (Viatur)was better,
