When I was considering going to Venice, I came across Karens blog, one of the owners of The Venice Experience. After 3 evenings and many glasses of wine later, I read all of her blog entries. In doing this, I was convinced that Venice was where I wanted to go on vacation. After booking the flight, I emailed Karen and... More

Fantastic way to see the quieter parts of Venice (suburb of Castello) we might have otherwise missed. Mike was great tour guide who took just the two of us on a photography tour sharing how best to take photos (on my point and shoot and my husband digital SLR), giving us some history of the area and taking us to... We took the 6 hour walking tour with Mike; we have been to Venice a few times but this time we had two teenage grandsons with us. We chose this tour for the first full day to give them a feel for Venice as a city in which people live and have lived for hundreds of years. We had scheduled... More

Thanks to Mike for our Chicchetti tour that they describe on their website as a pub crawl, which is a bit of a misnomer really. Its a pleasant stroll through some of the quieter streets and alleys of Venice with a bit of history thrown in and a visit to three bars / restaurants. The first two were small bars... More

A wet & windy day can't dampen the spirits when you have a six hour tour with Mike, He listens to what you want, Sue, my wife has to walk with a stick and what had attracted us to use "The Venice Experience" was that they state they happily look after people in wheelchairs and with walking difficulties and that... My wife and I recently completed two tours with The Venice Experience: One with Mike, the other with Karen. Our trip was organized such that we were in Venice the evening before the embarkation of our cruise. In order to optimize our time, we scheduled a private cicchetti tour with Mike the night of our arrival, and a half-day private... More

Gill and I would like to thank you very much for the tour you gave us in October. It was a great experience, very well presented and informative. We went back into Venice the following day and re-visited some of the areas you showed us , as well as new areas, and felt very comfortable and relaxed in our 'wanderings'.... More

Venice is delightful and beautiful; made more so by time spent with Karen and Mike. We did two tours one with Mike the Cicchetti Crawl and one with Karen the Backstreets Tour. Both were excellent - we learnt so much and saw some truly hidden gems that if left to our own devices we may have walked by without appreciating... More

We took two tours with Karen and what a delight. On our first day she met us at our hotel and we spent the next four hours enthralled by her knowledge and passion for Venice. With two teenagers she pitched the information just right and we learnt so much. We saw the main sights that anyone coming to Venice must... More

We recently had a four hour tour with Karen and it was fantastic. It was so nice to be one on one with her and we could ask her as many questions as our curiosity was piqued. She explained so many of the small customs of Venice and little hidden nooks and crannies and we avoided the "tourist path" which... More

Staying in Castello

Neighborhood Profile
Castello
Castello is the largest of the six sestieri (districts), and the only one not facing onto the Grand Canal. More than half of Castello is situated within Arsenale, the naval base, which occupies over one-fifth the area of Venice. This gentrified maritime neighborhood feels busy but casual. Castello’s side streets are laid back, with small boats lining canals criss-crossed by laundry. Semiannual exhibitions add a strong artsy current to the Arsenale area. Via Garibaldi in Castello, with its shops and bars, has one of Venice's rare straight and wide boulevards. When a large ship turns around the Lido to enter the Giudecca Canal, the startling sight creates an illusion that it will run aground right on Via Garibaldi! Families treasure Giardini near the island's tip, green with rare trees and grass, and Riva degli Schiavoni is a popular spot for Venetians to take a stroll to watch the sunset.
