We really weren't sure what to expect. We had some time to kill. Driving there was easy. Good signage. They have English information with a self guided tour of the castle. It was a little different. Interesting exhibits and beautiful views.

I found this castle by accident while wandering the trails above Bolzano. It's only a 30 minute walk from the town center. We came to Bozen ( Bolzano ) for the Ice Man museum... BUT, we were at the super Hotel Hanny on the hill outside of the city and we could see Schloss Runkelstein a short distance away. EVERYTHING IN BOLZANO HAS A GERMAN AND ITALIAN NAME SINCE THE BORDER HAS CHANGED A FEW TIMES VIA VARIOUS WARS.

This is a private castle. Well mantained but a bit expensive for merchandise. It takes only a 15 minutes walk from the city centre.
For enthusiasts of castle and/or frescoes, this is a must.The Vintler family acquired castle in 1385 and added a summer house. The castle has the most elaborate frescoes in a castle anywhere I have ever seen in Europe
