Actually Orta San Giulio is a very charming place. We've got there occasionally by car from Verbania on Maggiore Lake. It took us around 30 minutes to reach it! No crowds of tourists - small town was quiet and sleepy... Few travellers were sitting in the street cafes overlooking the island and enjoying the silence... We paid 4.5€ per person... More

I was there Feb 22, 2014 and it was beautiful. It has everything that an American would picture a perfect little Italian town to have, plenty of sites to take some spectacular photos, some great little restaurants overlooking the lake and some lovely shops to browse in while strolling through the town. I've been been to many cities and towns... More

Practically no cars enter the village which is on the side of this quiet, charming lake, with stunning natural scenery. Take a boat to the lovely little island of St Giulio and walk its perimeter - you may be lucky enough to hear the closed order nuns singing their haunting chants. It is just so special ....

I am a photographer and I love the Lake of Orta. Orta is also a beautiful place to visit, beautiful streets, and colorful houses.

Every day is a good day to visit lake Orta! The village is charming, offering good restaurants and loads of sightseeings around. Been there several times and enjoyed it tremendously each and every time. Make sure, you have the full day and that you don't miss the boat trip to the island...

Visited Orta San Giulio in November 2013, the village was almost empty, just few tourists and locals. Awesome atmosphere inside the tight "vicoli" and the view from the main square in just stunning. I suggest a stop at Sacro Monte Orta, 3 mins by car (i dnt know by foot), where you can take the best pictures.

The visit to this lake was enthralling. I stayed at San Rocco. The boat ride from the hotel to the island was amusing. The stay was beautiful and the view was marvellous.

Just wanted to get a plug in for the Orta San Giulio itself rather than the lake. Well preserved and quiet in mid October but I can imagine it gets crowded in the height of summer. Lots of eating options. A tip - the wine / deli 50m or so north of the square has an excellent range of aged... More

Whilst on holiday last week in Stresa our travel company Riveria Travel took us for the day to Lake Orta, crossed the lake from Pelle to Orta San Guilio on the peninsular and then the island Isola San Guilio where we did the 'Way of Silence' round the Monastry and visited the church. In the little old medieval village we... More
