I stayed in an apartment in Varenna which happened to be beside Villa Monastero. I understan that the monastery was boughht by a rich count with more money than sense it seems to me. The actual Villa is totally dominated in its interior by an overwhelming and completely out of scale staircase. Ornate and ostencious. Apart from the strange distribution... More

We passed by on a Monday and unfortunately we could not visit the villa cause it is closed on Mondays. We walked through the beautiful gardens and enjoyed the amazing views of the serene lake Como. Great for taking photos.

A must see in Varenna! A beautiful villa with an amazing history, and glorious gardens. The likes of Enrico Fermi and Rossini stayed, lectured and composed there.

Well worthwhile if going to Varenna. We took a ferry from Bellaggio Beautiful garden with glorious views back to Bellagio and also to Menaggio. Narrow gardens (which must run about 1.5kms) abutting the water edge and on a few levels Lots of beautiful areas to sit and reflecting the Beaty surrounding you Entry to garden was 5 euro and there... Very old local house now open to visitors with an incredible garden clinging to the shore of Lake Como. A fascinating insight to local history that extends well beyond local boundaries. Not to be missed if you are in the area.

We walked through the old monastery which was has been bought and done up through the centuries by well to do families so is more of a living quarters but the long thin garden area along the lake is very relaxing and well kept. Worth a visit.

Take the time to viist the gardens and the house. Park across the road int he car park- 2 euros per hour. Take a picnic lunch and enjoy the grounds and gardens. House is magnificent- carved wooden mirrors were a favorites as well as the magnificent light fixtures. The gardeners need to be commended.

I'm writing this after visiting both Villa Balbianello and Villa Carlotta. Both a very good, but Monastero lags behind for a number of reasons:- the gardens don't seem quite as well maintained, many paths were closed off., and it just seemed not quite as good value for money. Don't get me wrong, they're good, but I just wasn't impressed in... More

Villa Monastero is a botanical garden noted for its huge variety of specimens, it is also a villa museum. The villa was built on the ruins of a Cistercian monastery, hence the name. Starting with the grand staircase and the frescoes of composers along the wall, to my untrained eye it appears to have a number of different decorating periods... More

Villa Monastero is best known for its long, narrow garden that stretches for more than a mile along Lake Como. I have walked the terraces and promenades many times throughout the years when involved with conferences at the villa. The hundreds of flowers, plants and trees, such as citrus, agave, palms, cypress and eucalyptus always beckon to me along with... More
