The grounds are large. The castle (actually a palace built to look like a castle) is beautiful. But the entire property is shabby and in desperate need of maintenance and upkeep. The gardens and grounds are overgrown with grass and weeds. Stones and paving are broken. There are barricades everywhere. The single café is tucked all the way at the... More

This great castle is sadly not that commercialized as many others, but it is simply amazing and very worth visiting. Even outside is it great and amazing with all those gardens and seaside in summer but interior is simply fairy tale. It reflects all the glory of Trieste and surroundings in the Austro-Hungarian times of 19th century when Trieste was... More

The castle and gardens are beautiful. A definite must to visit if in the area. The whole area is less touristy than other parts/towns in Italy and Miamare is a real treat for a relaxed outing in beautiful surroundings. The exhibits in the castle and gardens are well marked and informative. Highly recommended.

The lakeside castle is a joy to visit, the story of Maximillian the Austro-Hungarian monarch is fascinating, the gardens provide a lovely place to walk and wonder.

Visit the castle, enjoy the stunning views of the Trieste gulf and walk around the grounds. It's truly magical. Arrive early during the high season if you want to park close to the main gate!!!

Built by Prince Max, the spare to the Austrian throne in the 1860s, Miramare (See the Sea) is a very nice country mansion. Max put a lot of nautical thought into the design but never finished it, leaving to become Emperor of Mexico, where the locals did not appreciate his efforts and executed him within several years. This is not... More

19th century excess in a beautiful location, worth a half a day. Take the bus from the main train station, it takes about 1/2 hours and if you have the 2 day tourist pass it's free all the way.

Max's castle is impressive. It is really a pitty that the park is in a lousy condition. Someone in Triest told us that they have only one gardener for the whole thing.

Didn't actually go inside the castle itself but the walk up to the castle is lovely and the surrounding gardens are breathtaking. Walk a little further and you'll enter a WWF protected sanctuary. Really serene and a lovely place to visit

Archduke Maximillians castle sits overlooking the Adriatic. Full of history of the Habsburg dynasty the rooms are carefully preserved. The very informative audioguide is a must- there is some information in each room in English but not enough to know what you are really seeing. As he traveled extensively his castle reflects his love of the sea and his architectural... More
