It is a trick to find but well worth the effort. The lovely guide Francesca took us to the attic to experience the wonderful fragrance that fills the air from hundreds of ancient barrels of aging balsamic vinegar. This delicious liquid is made from either Trebbiano or Lambrusco grapes that are crushed and simmered for 24 hours to reduce the... More

We emailed to ask if we could have a tour and were answered quickly by Davide. It was not hard to find with a GPS and the grounds were beautiful. Davide was an excellent teacher about the making of traditionale balsamic vinegar. The tour was very interesting and we learned how much time and patience is involved. At the end... More

I have had many other types of balsamic from this region and San donnino is the best. You can't go wrong with a tour here to learn about the process but better yet join a food tour for the entire region at italianfoodtours.com. This is how we got to come here and it was great!!

We came to Villa San Donnino based on other Tripadvisor recommendations and it was seriously one of the most memorable things we did during our trip to Italy. We made a booking and Davide promptly replied to all of our emails. You definitely need a car to get here but it is something you must do when in Modena. We... More

We arrived in Modena, with snow on the ground. Impressed by the impressive grounds, we were welcomed warmly by Davide to his idyllic Villa. Unaware of the history of traditional balsamic, Davide was more than happy to teach us and answered the many questions we had to ask. He showed us his true passion for this historical art form as... I came to Villa San Donnino in March with a group while we were passing through Modena on a tour of Italy. We met the owner, Davide, who took us on a private tour of his facility, showed us a very insightful video (shot right on the premises) of the process of making Traditional Balsamico, and gave us an amazing... We really enjoyed our visit here. We were given an overview of the production of balsamic vinegar - quite a surprising and unexpected process - and very unlike that for the production for wine. The vinegar tasting session at the end was illuminating - we had never before appreciated the vast difference between good quality balsamic vinegar and the mass... More

Davide is so helpful in his explanation of the process of making Balsamic vinegar. Before coming to his operation I had no knowledge of what it meant to have real Balsamic vinegar. Davide is a wealth of knowledge and willingly shares it with anyone interested. Boy you can really taste the difference. In real terms though it sounds expensive, in... More

We all learned a lot about balsamic vinegar production & the growing of grapes by the owner. A small family business with a lot of heart.
