Very impressive! The 2-hour wait in a long line in the hot sun to get into the Basillica was almost worth it. The crowds inside are overwhelming and almost destroy any sense of awe and reverence -- more like a cattle round-up.

It was quite the sight. We did not care to stand in the hours and hours-long line to see the interior of the Basilica (hardly any shade, sun beating down!), but the immensity of the piazza is worthy of a visit alone, especially if you're on your way to/from the Vatican museums. Really, really big!

A great place to stand and see yourself as one in the middle of a small planet. Not as crowded as other parts of the Vatican.

The line was Sooooooo long! we actually didn't get inside the city. Outside in St Peters square there was still a lot of picture taking and cool things to see.

When you approach the Vatican from Castel San Angelo, St. Peter's Square with the Basilica in the background is your first introduction to the seat of the Catholic faith and it is an impressive one. Take advantage of being in the square to get plenty of photos of the Papal apartment, the Basilica, a Papal Audience if it is happening,... More

St Peters Square is located on the eastern edge of the Vatican City right in front of St Peters Basilica. It is also about 3 or 4 blocks west of the Tiber River near the center of Rome. This square is huge and was designed so that thousands of people can assemble and listen to the Pope. I visited this... More

If you don't want to wait in line for the Vatican Museums or St. Peter's Basilica, you can still at least come and check out the square. So many statues and the architecture is awesome. While I was there, the changing of the guard occurred. It was awesome to watch. The Pope uses Swiss guards, has for hundreds of years,... More

St Peters Square was designed in such a way that people can see the pope when he says his speech and prayers. You can now understand why the square is so massive, fitting in thousands of people. When you stand in the middle of the square, you are surrounded by such superior architecture. Beautiful.

Absolutely beautiful to see - the colonnades are massive yet excellently crafted, and the piazza itself is full of life and culture, coupled with the ever-present feel of Christian architecture. A truly beautiful piazza.
