Wednesday, April 25, 2012-Liberation Day in Italy and the pope was there for a papal audience. I guess he is there most Wednesdays so they close St. Peter's Basilica until 1pm. No visit to Rome is complete without experiencing the sheer size of St. Peter's square.
We've visited this magnificent square twice - once when it was almost empty and the second time when it was packed with over half a million people who came to the Easter ceremony with the Pope blessing the audiences in dozens of languages.

Arrived just after eight and it was totally empty, save for some nuns and priests. It was eerie to see all the empty chairs that I had only ever seen packed on tv.
