What I like about this square is that it isn't a square at all, but resembles a gigantic keyhole. I shall never forget arriving at the square by accident just as the Pope was about to appear ... even though I am not a Roman Catholic I was still able to sense and join in the excitement. As well as... More

Really nice atmosphere but it is very busy! Lots of photo opportunity's around. I think everyone can enjoy a part of this.

While standing in line to go into St Peter's Basilica one gets a chance to truly admire the architecture and statues around this square. We were there late afternoon and the lighting was beautiful for photographs without too many tourists. The square is cordoned off from sprukers - so there is some reprieve. Bathrooms are on the left side of... More

This is one of the great squares of the world and is impressive both for its size and its beauty. Wish we could have been there for a papal appearance.

Papal Audience is on Wednesdays between 930am-1030am. The website said 1030am, but thankfully we arrived early because the Pope started driving around and waving hello to the crowd around 930am. Find a seat or stand near the wooden dividers and hopefully he will drive by your area. He does not have a scheduled route every single time, he just drives... More

Walking into st peters square took my breath away. Unbelievable beauty and precision and grandeur. How did they do it ?! During the day it will be full of tourists and souvenir stalls and in the evenings it will quieten down with the golden glow of st Peters basilica lit up. On some days the pope will make an appearance... More

We went on Sunday because the pope puts in an appearance at noon. We arrived at 11:30 and expected him to be on the balcony of St. Peter's. But he gives his speech from the papal apartments way up on the last floor from a window.

It seems like everyone goes to St. Peter's Square for good reason....it is so large....and so impressive....and so much history has happened in the Square....and it is wonderful to photograph. And it is also just nice to sit in the Square and relax and watch people from all over the world enjoy the majesty of it.

Of course to be in the St. Peter's Square when the Pope is present - either in the Basilica's Balcony, or at his private window overlooking the Square or during a procession like the Palm Sunday procession is surely great. But my best moments there have been during the quiet hours of the night or when during the day it... More

Was a very neat experience to stand in the center of the square, in front of the obelisk that was present at the time of St. Peter's execution, and also see the surrounding statues atop the platforms created by Michelangelo's students that added to the awe.
