There is a lot to see in the Square, even if you don't visit the Basilica. The beautiful columns and statues above as well as the fountain in the center of the Square are worth seeing.

I have been in this Magnificent Piazza around 4 times already, there are no words to describe the feeling you experience when you are in the piazza. The only thing I can say is that everyone, specially Catholics, should plan to visit this place at least once in a lifetime. The only recommendation is to try to be there wednesday... More

Have been here twice - once I even saw the Pope speak! It's a huge square and it gives you a clear idea of the massive numbers of Catholic worshippers who attend the square for special occasions. The basilica looks ginormous in the background. It's old so it carries a nostalgic atmosphere - even if you're not Catholic.

During our latest visit in Rome it was magnificent staying in this square with lots of people from all over the world in the days of sanctification of two Popes. The place is marvellous, a masterpiece of architecture, you are really in the centre of Christianism and you can't stop admiring this place. The columns seem to embrace you both... More

It's difficult to analyze my feeling after twice visiting the square during our visit. I have seen the square depicted so very many times in film and pictures that it was generally what I expected to see - perhaps, odd as this sounds, even a bit smaller than I had expected. The fountain was all covered in scaffolds.

When you step out of St. Peter's and see the vast square and the sculptures, the Swiss Guard, the sculptures standing sentinel all around the area and see the chimney where the new pope is announced, you just marvel. We enjoyed meeting people from all around the world as we offered to take pictures for them on their cameras.

This square was fantastic, we passed by it on the bus tours on our first days in Rome and were impressed by the sheer size. It however is quite surreal to be standing in the middle. Take panoramic photographs. Eat an ice cream and take it all in. It's so impressive. For a bit of fun watch the crowds lining... More

Go mail a postcard - the Vatican post office is right in the square. It is a very beautiful square. You can see the window where the Pope appears to preach. If you have a few days in Rome, try to time your trip with the Pope appearing. We were not able to do this but it must be very... More
