We took the subway there with out a problem and walked the few blocks to the entrance. There we were told by a tour guide sales person who does not give the tours that the wait to enter the Vatican is many hours long. I would not know how to get around this problem, but when we were there with a tour, there were so many people all assembled inside the Sistine Chapel that I felt ill from the crowding. Perhaps to see this wonderful site, it may be better to go off season (we were there in mid-October) more

The queue for 'normal' folk to get into the Vatican Museum generally tends to be in excess of 3km long at any time during the day in the summer season.
