It is a thrill to wander through these gardens and discover all the different details. The fountains are amazing, & I was told that they run solely off gravity. This place is great for photography. Even an amateur can snap shots that look as good if not better than framed art you can pay $$$ for. Definitely worthwhile! more

tivoli don't have much to offer but the 3 villas and some nice streets, but villa d'este is rightfully an unesco site. the outside gardens, also known as tivoli gardens, are startling and if you're there on a nice weather day it is even more overwhelming. a little bit down from the train station at tivoli, on your left, there... more

We hired a private tour guide, Pepe, from allarounditaly.net, who was incredibly knowledgeable. We first toured the cardinal's residence, which was filled with incredible artwork and replete with fascinating history. We then ventured down the many stairs(This is not a place for anyone who has difficulty walking or climbing stairs.) to the outstanding gardens. This place is a photographer's dream!... more

About 45 miles outside of Rome is the mountain-top town of Tivoli. Before driving up, I would advise you stop at Villa Adraina at the base of the mountain--the ruins of Emperor Hadrian's palace and a UNESCO World Heritage Site (see separate review under Villa Adriana.) It's also illuminating to see what became of much of the marble missing from... more

Villa d'Este is a spectacular estate and gardens located in Tivoli, about one hour from Rome via commuter train. The water features and floral plantings are fantastic and the overall experience is top-notch. The myriad types of fountains are exceptional. more

Wanting a day trip out of Rome, particularly in the heat of summer? Visit Tivoli (an hour's train journey out of Rome) and among the interesting villas to explore, be sure to include Villa D'Este. Take the metro to Tiburtina (blue line, Metro B), then take the overland train to Tivoli. On arrival, walk through the charming old town, following... more

Have just visited at the end of March - narcissi, tulips and very much else in flower, and the fountains, of course, just amazing; all powered by natural waterflow too! These gardens are very well worth combining with the totally different but very compelling Villa Adriana, only a few kms away. more
