The mosaics here are outstanding, and in the small side chapel you can see them close-to. Relatively quiet, and well worth a visit.

I second what everyone else says: gorgeous, hidden, small, gem, mosaics, well-lit. It's lovely dip into byzantine art. A welcome relief from the over-sized churches of Rome, incl the nearby Sta Maria Maggiore. I'd pick Santa Prassade any day.

Very small jewel full of wonderful mosaics in a small street near Santa Maria Maggiore. Not full of tourists.

If you stay at the Mecente Palace Hotel this hidden treasure is across the street to the west down a side street. I walked this basilica open every day and finally on our last day there we went down and say it. It is not as impressive as the other larger basilicas throughout Rome but it is pretty powerful. Probably my favourite church in Rome. Only small but such beautiful mosaics and an amazing tiny chapel that houses the column Jesus was tied to when whipped before his crucification.

Though you pay for the lighting of the mosaics- and it lasts only 5 minutes, it is very good, enabling the visitor to see the spectacular late antique art work.

This church is hidden away down a courtyard off Via Merulana, opposite the Hotel Doria, near to Piazza Santa Maria Maggiore. It is very plain from the outside, but inside, it's a real gem. There are some wonderful mosaics and frescos and a magnificent marble altar. Well worth a visit.
