We were visiting the monument of Vittorio Emmanuel II and found this magnificent church behind the Piazza. Although the exterior is unimpressive, the interior is truly fantastic - it is very similar to Santa Maria Maggiore but without the crowds. Very highly recommended.

Doesn't look like the most impressive church on the outside but the inside is fantastic. Lined with chandeliers and marble, interesting tombs stones and lovely paintings. One of the best in Rome!

Walking around in Rome it does not stop: from one unique building to another. This basilica is truly beautiful in all it is details and you will enjoy every moment you spend there. It is next to Piazza Venezia and yes: Forum Romano is just to the other site.

We found this church accidentally because you can access it from the terrace of the Vittorio Emmanual museum (neoclassical building next to the forum with the bronze statue of emmanual on a horse). The interior is quite serene and beautiful. We took thirty minutes to admire the artwork and details. Well worth it to drop in.

Expect quite a few steps to get to it, but the church is worth it. Gold plated ceiling and beautiful paintings high on the walls. Close to Piazza venezia which you must visit anyway.

This very old church is a must for everyone. Close to VE monument. No photo allowed...evenso noisy US citizens took pictures and ignored the guards request to observe the signs. Remember to be polite and follow codes of dressing and behaving!

Interior of a church is a surprisingly good. Great place to sit and rest in the middle of a day. And only I consider steps from this church a better ones then a Spanish? :)

Lovely church just off the Monument Vittorio Emanule and accessible from one of the monument's decks. Observations: no pictures allowed----cameras flashing everywhere; dress accordingly for a church----short shorts, tees, flip flops....oh well. Remember I am old(er) and of a different era. Took the opportunity to light a candle in memory of my departed mother and father which had a pleasant... More

There are 124 steps. Rome is a city where you can walk everywhere. And what a pleasure. The Basilica Santa Maria is a stunning church dating from the 6th century. Climbing the stairs to the Basilica Santa Maria d'Aracoeli (St. Mary of the Altar of Heaven) is something that will offset the great lunches available in the area. The Basilica... More
