The catacombs are impressive and well worth a visit. They can be reached by metro and bus and are not far from the centre although it was tiring on the bus in the heat in August. If you have an extra day in Rome, you should take the time to visit San Callisto Catacombs. It's very easy to get there by subway and bus (218 from San Giovanni Laterano stop). Very interesting to see, glad we went. Don't walk though, it's further than it looks on the Map. Go to San Giovanni on the metro or somehow get to the little bus station on the corner of Piazza di Porta San Giovanni / Via Emanuele Filiberto. We were there April 26, 2008. One thing to remember is that the Catacombs close at noon and reopen at 2pm. We arrived a little after noon and had to wait until 2pm to purchase tickets (6 Euros). The Catacombs of St. Callixtus were truly one of the highlights of our June 2006 visit to Rome. We took the subway to Circus Maximus and then the bus and were surprised to see how close by they were.
