Do not miss this uncrowded and unusual church just a few blocks from the Colosseum. You will probably never have another chance to see layers of history including a pagan altar. My daughter's friend, who had studied in Rome, put this at the top of her list of places to visit, and it was great advice. more

We watched a program about this unique church on National Geographic before we left for Rome and put it on our list of must-sees for this trip. It is located near the Colosseum. We were there October 2, 2009 & the price then was 5 E each to see the lower churches. It is open Mon - Sat 9 am... more

Visiting the Colosseum? Who am I kidding, of COURSE you're visiting the Colosseum. Well then, take a few minutes out of your day, walk the 0.6km from the Colosseum exit over to the Basilica di San Clemente. It's sooo worth it! First warning is that there is no photography allowed anywhere inside the churches. They've also raised the ticket price... more

San Clemente is amazing. The 12th century church is a treasure unto itself. Yet it is built on top of an ancient church, which in turn is built on top of an ancient house-church (where Christians worshipped in secret during the times of the persecutions). It's a site of 2000 years of Christian worship. They've excavated the 2 lower levels... more

I really wanted to see the Roman underground in this form so I did some research which brought me to this church. It's a short walk from the Colosseum and there's a St. Clemente road which you should follow...things are closer than they seem in Rome. The 12th century church is fascinating with a fountain and courtyard in front. Then... more

This was one of the coolest places we saw in Rome. We read about it in our guidebook and weren't sure about whether we should stop or not, but we were in the neighborhood and decided to check it out. Boy, am I glad we did. There were very few people at the site, even in the middle of June,... more

We walked to San Clemente on San Giovanni in Laterno, after visiting the Colosseum as it is very close by. We are lost for a few minutes, then able to find our way. It is a 3 tiered basilica with a 12th century church on top of a 4th century church on top of a late 2nd century temple. The... more

Every taxi driver, every tour guide, concierge, you get the drift said, "you must visit San Clemente" so we did. The church is actually three churches with an underground water source that gurgles while you walk. There is, as usally existing in ancient societies, an amalgamation of beliefs, religions and creeds housed in one place. There are no less than... more

We visited the Basilica one afternoon in July. It was closed when we got there with a notice telling us it would open after about 40 mins. We sat on the benches outside and also had a lovely but cheap feed from the little shop across the road. Not the big sit down place but a very little pizza place,... more
