Quite frankly, I didn't get the attraction to the steps. Rome has many, many beautiful, historic and interesting sights. These steps are just not that interesting. As others have noted, the steps and square are crowded with hords of tourists & vendors pushing cheap souvniers. Teenagers broke out into a fight..which we suspected may be a diversionary tactic for pick... more

Our hotel was at the top of the Spanish Steps so that's the first place we went to on arrival in Rome and a pushy flower vendor kept following me to give me roses all though I kept saying no. He finally managed to force 3 into my hand implying they were free. Then he followed us until we gave... more

Aside form the tips on the actual location which you can find in any guide, or by now even ask any of the sellers that hang around the steps, there is much to be said about the area around the Spanish Steps. It often happens that tourists are drawn to the steps for a night out (I guess thinking that... more

the atmosphere sitting on the Spanish Steps was fantastic. great just to sit and watch all the goings on. lovely by day or night, as all flood lit after dark. on night of aug 3rd an open air opera concert took place, with 2 men and 2 women. after this there was a dance routine, which was brilliant. the crowd... more

As many others say, "Yep! They're steps!" There IS a carnival-like atmosphere, and the hawkers are absolutely annoying to no end. Even after saying "NO!" and turning away, they actually followed us around! I wish I would have found a better way of dealing with these annoying hawkers. That said, there are a lot of great restaurants (http://www.anticaenoteca.com/) and shops... more

I really enjoyed going to the Spanish steps and you get some good views from the top. However, there are flower pushers everywhere and of whom do not leave you alone (ladies do not accept the flowers they will just make your bloke pay for them) If not them, there are people tryng to sell you tickets of pub crawls... more

Do not expect any excitement or anything spectacular. The steps are filled with tourists and vendors selling tourist-y stuff. My suggestion is you will appreciate the steps more if you happen to "stumble upon" it while shopping near the area, instead of deliberately making a trip there. more

The steps are a nice spot to sit and relax. I guess people climb them, but we were too lazy. The fountain at the bottom is actually prettier and more interesting. This whole area is crawling with people all the time. If you are travelling with a lovely lady, the flower vendors will come up and give her flowers, then... more

Beautiful piece of architecture and a carnival like atmosphere with sketch artists and people selling wares. Also a nice place to sit and people watch if you don't mind the sun. Of course it is gross to see a McDonald's at the food of the steps but shutter your eyes as you walk by it. more

Saw the spanish steps and agree that it is a very nice vista, but nothing on the colosseum or some of the other attractions in Rome. Still it is at the top of one of the most famous shopping streets in Rome, and I guess that combination is reasonably special. more
