Skip the Eurail Pass; Rail travel in Europe hit or miss now

We spent nearly $2000 for Eurail passes and reservation fees for a family of 4 (plus one "free" child under 12 so 5 people total but only 4 we had to pay for) for "5" days of... read more

The trains run on time ALWAYS! Be there early because you can check where your car will be and it could take a while to walk down the platform. The platform numbers come up better than they did in the past. The trains have lost the "romance", they're just trains now and somewhat cramped but you automatically get a seat... More

We spent nearly $2000 for Eurail passes and reservation fees for a family of 4 (plus one "free" child under 12 so 5 people total but only 4 we had to pay for) for "5" days of travel between France/Italy/Austria/added a 4th country never went to because no pass for just "3 countries". Any of the desirable trains (like high... More

First thing, just upgrade to first class, otherwise you are treated like cattle, in uncomfortable and inhospitable cars. Next, we took a train from Rome to Salerno & Salerno to Rome (amalfi coast day trip), the train coming back from Salerno into Roma Termini was 2 hours late. 1 hour because of 'traffic', and another because the conductors and operators... This was our first time travelling by train thru Europe by ourselves and we a little nervous. We caught the train in Ashford and were met by their rep and guided to our seat ( excellent service). We travelled first class as there wasn't much of a difference in price and we highly delighted by the service. The train was... More

We took two trains - one from Florence to Rome and another to Naples. Both times traveled business class which was definitely worth it. Fare was inexpensive, trains were on-time, clean and getting to and from train stations was easy. Definitely recommend.

On our trip, we did a few different tren italia routes with varying results. The first was Rome to Pisa. This one was quite nice. It was air conditioned with a bathroom and nice seats with a tray table in front. This is highly recommended, even in second class. Do make sure you board in the right carriage (carrozza) so... The worst service I have already seen in my life. I wanted to rebook a trip and: 1) by the site, I couldn`t (an error ocurred); 2) by the phone, an eletronic message said they would call me back and never called; 3) so, I had to go personally, get a cue and, finally, the girl asked me to go... I have been traveling by rail in Europe for many years. The thrill is officially gone. I took a TAV from Milano to Roma and it was really awful. The seats are far worse than airline coach seats -- I did not think that was even possible. The whole interior looked like an airline tube. The overhead storage bin was... More

I traveled on the Frecciarosa train from Rome to Milan and return- economy class. The journey was very comfortable. The seats are good, clean and spacious. The in-train cafe offers good selection of food but is a little pricey. Our train was stuck at a spot for more than an hour. Thats when the staff came about serving everyone drinks... More

Travelled first class again with this company and was as impressed this time. We travelled with Eurostar in July and the train was delayed and as compensation we where given a FREE return London - Paris learn a lesson British rail companies and you may get better passenger feedback.
