Context provides an in-depth alternative to traditional tours. Context's Rome walking seminars are an alternative to typical guided tours. With over 50 different walks led by Ph.D. or MA-level scholars, and with the smallest group size available—only six people. Context is much more than a walking tour of Rome.

Agnes delivered an excellent walk on the sculptures at the Centrale Montemartini. The presentation was clear, informative, and erudite, delivered with a sense of humour and displayed a formidable depth of knowledge. The chronological exposition, so rare to be able to do in Rome, created a lucid narrative that facilitated a greater comprehension of the ancient Roman world. As a... More

Our guide was an archeologist, and her tour was wonderful. It was like taking a college class with a the best professor in the department--a lively, interesting presentation that held the interest of all of us--parents and teen.

My husband and I signed up for the 4-hour walking tour of the Vatican at the suggestion of a friend who had recently visited Italy. We were delighted with the experience. The docent was extremely knowledgeable (Ph.D. in archeology with a secondary Master's in Christian archeology) and she was very enthusiastic about the sights we were seeing. We were very... More

Our tour guide was extremely knowledgeable, very professional and very friendly and personable. He is attention to detail was outstanding and he was able to provide us with a very rich and detailed insight into the life of the ancient... More

My wife and I have done half a dozen Context tours in Rome in recent years. All have been superb. The docents have been knowledgeable, congenial, and in tune with the interests and background of the group members. The walks that particularly stood out for us were the tours of the Vatican, the Forum/Colosseum (Roma Antica), St. John Lateran Basilica,... More

We toured the Vatican Museum and the basilica with Nina and cannot say enough good things about her as a guide and about the whole experience. These tours are a bit expensive but absolutely, positively worth it. We never waited in line, saw the highlights of the complex but also got a lot of background information and were pointed to... We went for the "Roma Antica" private walk from the Roman Forum to the Colosseum. Although the walk was for 4 hours, it all went so quickly. Our fabulous guide, Agnes Crawford, totally made Roman history come alive for us - my husband and I had wished we could have done a context walk like this when we had to... More

Four of us took a morning private tour of the Vatican with Context. our tour guide was Nina and she did a marvelous job. She met us at the arranged time and helped us see a great variety of things. She was extremely knowledgable and pointed out many interesting things we had missed on a prior trip through the Vatican... More

I arranged a private "From Rome with Love" tour for a group. It followed a long technical meeting - allowing us to get out and walk before dinner. The tour was with Liz Brewster who is extremely knowlegable about the city, art, archecture and history. She was a pleasure to spend time with and customized the tour to our questions... More

We did the Ancient Rome discovery private walk with Jose Grave de Peralta. We have done several Context tours which have all been great, but Jose was a truly exceptional guide. He was able to craft a discussion that appealed to our 10yo as well as to us. My husband and I have visited the area before on our own... More

Staying in Monti

Neighborhood Profile
Monti
Monti is Rome’s rebel yell. This neighborhood just west of Termini train station mixes grit with fun as it continues to fight for its reputation as a magnet for the artsy, alternative, and hipster. Every season, quirky boutiques and food spots sprout up on its cobblestone streets. The neighborhood supports unique and homegrown businesses that cater to its longtime residents as well as hipsters on the hunt. Hang out at Piazza della Madonna dei Monti anytime after lunch and you'll always find something going on.
