Context provides an in-depth alternative to traditional tours. Context's Rome walking seminars are an alternative to typical guided tours. With over 50 different walks led by Ph.D. or MA-level scholars, and with the smallest group size available—only six people. Context is much more than a walking tour of Rome.

Based upon a referral from a friend who visited Rome a few years ago, we booked a total of 3 Context Tours during our two week Italy trip: 1. Coliseum and Ancient Rome (this review). 2. Vatican Museums & St. Peters. 3. Pompeii. We had a party of 4, so we were assured of a tour. We were absolutely delighted... More

Our tour guide Phillip Ditchfield was a fantastic guide. We hesitated spending the money but found this to be one of our highlights and wish Phillip had been with us the entire week. Would highly recommend!

Gregory was a terrifice guide. His education and experience, combined with his obvious passion for the art and history he was guiding us through, made this tour incredibly special. I learned so much, and enjoyed every second of it. Our small group of 5 was just the right size, and I felt sorry for the folks trooping by in tour... More

We booked Context Tours for our recent trip to Rome and Florence. These tours are conducted by docents, PhD and individuals who have a vast knowledge of the subject matter. i.e. art historians, history professor, etc. Every tour was a treat. We were given in depth information on the subject matter that was amazing. I think they are best suited... More

My husband and I were very pleased with the tour of the Vatican Museums and St. Peter's Basilica. We had 5 people in our group which was a perfect size. Our docent was Gulia Faccin who is an archaeologist currently participating in a dig in the Colosseum. She was a very informative guide, who gave us a lot of background... More

Hi Awerring, Thank you for the nice summary of our experience on our Vatican walk. You hit it exactly right: The museums and Sistine Chapel are a lot more manageable during the off-season. We love Rome, generally, in November and February. Those are great times of the year. We look forward to having you back in the future for another... More

After having seen the Vatican both ways, there is no comparison. At one of the spectrum is picking your way through the crowds to try to figure out what is important and interesting, outside of the most well-known pieces. The exact opposite experience is being enlightened and entertained with stories and background on a wide variety of aspects of the... More

Richard, Thank you for the feedback. We pretty much think about this problem 24/7: How can we provide the most immersive experience for a visitor to Rome? Often having an expert like an art historian in the Vatican or an archaeologist in the Colosseum—or better than either of those, something really offbeat like an urban speleologist in the underground ancient... We visited Rome with our two daughters (11 &15) in June 2015. My husband had been to Rome a few times before and was wary of the crowds and the "herd tour" mentality he had experienced on past trips and so we went ahead and booked three private tours with Context. I can say without reservation that this was money... More

Hi JRHV, Thanks for the great feedback about your trip. Ack, there's nothing worse than falling victim to bad gelato! I'm so happy that we were able to steer you adroitly through that maze and others, and that your experiences with our docents and on our walks was so enriching for your entire family. We'd love to have you join... More

Our 2 Context Rome Tours were highlights of our entire 2 week vacation in Italy! Olivia Ercoli (college professor & author) was warm, friendly & incredibly knowledgable about Italian & Vatican art history - we learned so much from her. She shared key details about the museum highlights, providing valuable context of Vatican history. She also spent 20+ minutes preparing... More

We had a wonderful experience with Context Travel and Patricia, our guide. We visited three sites, including the Crypta Balbi. Patricia is an archeologist and actually excavated part of the Crypta Balbi many years ago. She was incredibly knowledgable and answered every question. This was not just a tour to look at a particular monument. It was a tour that... More

Not just any tour, this was focused and relevant to our 10 and 8 year old. The docent was brilliant... making the stories and mythological characters come alive. She introduced her academic research in a way that sparked the children's interest. Wish I could have done more CONTEXT Tours in Rome...

Hi mumwithkids71, Thanks for the feedback. Context was founded by a young family. Our first corporate disaster struck when the founders' daughter pulled our only computer off the desk. :) So, it really strikes a chord with us when a family like yours has such a powerful experience on our family tours. We look forward to having you back on... More
