Context provides an in-depth alternative to traditional tours...

Context provides an in-depth alternative to traditional tours. Context's Rome walking seminars are an alternative to typical guided tours. With over 50 different walks led by Ph.D. or MA-level scholars, and with the smallest group size available—only six people. Context is much more than a walking tour of Rome.

Our guide, Guido, was excellent. He was very knowledgeable about Ostia's history and answered any questions. He was able to describe what it would have looked like in great detail. The time went too fast and there is so much to see. If you enjoy Ancient Roman history, the tour to Ostia is recommended. Even my kids understood and enjoyed... More

You should always try to tour in a small group with a guide that really knows what he/she is talking about. Context Rome Tours runs such excellent guided tours. My wife and I took two 4-hour tours, back to back on our trip to Rome a few weeks ago. Although we were very tired at the end of the day,... More

We decided to splurge on a private tour, "Food Culture of Rome," led by American-born Maureen Fant, a classicist-turned-food-writer who is a woman of strong opinions and quite a character. Maureen took us through the new Testaccio Market, a riot of color and flavors. There we snacked on pizza bianca with olives, which is certainly an improvement on any bread... More

As a great fan of Context Tours, my visit to Rome included a Context Tour of the Borghese Gallery. As always, the guide, Frank Dabell, provided the full context of the evolution of the collection, the life of the collectors, and the highlights that distinguish this assemblage of works of art. Frank navigated us through the extensive collection, focusing on... More

My husband and I did a total of 6 tours in 4 days, each with different tour companies, and our tour of Ostia Antica with our docent Dony through Context Travel was by far our favorite. (My husband calls it the highlight of his first trip to Rome!) I can't recommend this tour enough. We had a private tour with... More

Wonderful informative tour of the Vatican Museums and St. Peter's Basilica. Cecilia was very knowledgeable and friendly. I can't believe she was able to talk and teach the whole time! 4 hours flew by and I feel like I learned so much more about ancient Rome, the rise of the Christian/Catholic church and the great Renaissance artists involved. Highly recommend... More

We took the Ostia Antica tour on Oct. 5th and it was one of our vacation highlights. Our guide was Liddia (I'm not sure of the spelling), and she was amazing. My sister and I felt she was extremely knowledgeable and knew, as well as loved, this place. She took the time to really help us understand the history and... More

My sister and I visited Rome in October 2015 and while there went on two tours with Context tours, one to Ostia Antica and one to the Palatine Hill, Roman Forum and Coliseum. Both tours were great. Our tour guide, Livia Galante, was amazing. She was so knowledgeable and we learned so much from her. She was quite passionate about... More

Fantastic tour and the docent Elisabeth Fuhrmann-Schembri was phenomenal. Her knowledge of the historical period and her enthusiasm for what she was presenting to us during out walking tour came out time and again. I would highly recommend Elisabeth and the Context tour of the Colosseum and Imperial Rome Tour.

You are always in good hands with Context a Tours! I have taken many Context tours in several European cities over the years and this was one of the best. More specialized than most, but I have been on Vatican, Caravaggio, and several others before and the guides will do a good job of meeting you where you are.. Every... More

Staying in Monti

Neighborhood Profile
Monti is Rome’s rebel yell. This neighborhood just west of Termini train station mixes grit with fun as it continues to fight for its reputation as a magnet for the artsy, alternative, and hipster. Every season, quirky boutiques and food spots sprout up on its cobblestone streets. The neighborhood supports unique and homegrown businesses that cater to its longtime residents as well as hipsters on the hunt. Hang out at Piazza della Madonna dei Monti anytime after lunch and you'll always find something going on.
