Unimaginable crowds/crush aside and obviously working in difficult circumstances, unlike Dark Rome guides at Borghese Museum and Colosseum, Vatican guide disinterested in her flock of 21, working on rote, describing features when SHE reached them, disregarding fact majority of her group still trying to push through the throngs. Frequently moved on without advising her group she was doing so and... More

Really enjoyed this and absolutely blown away at the size of the place with all of the artwork. Big tip is to do the Vatican Museum tour and then the tour guide takes you through from the Sistine Chapel straight into St Peter Basilica skipping the queues outside :). An absolute must see. For €7 you can go to the... More

As part of our stay in Rome, my wife and I toured the Vatican as part of a group with What A Life Tours. This company rates itself as the number 1 Vatican tour operator. Their literature quotes a cost of 25 euros +ticket admission to the Vatican museum and direct access to ST PETER'S BASILICA. The total cost however... More

We traveled in the middle of May 2012 so it was not the "tourist" season yet. It was crowded but not unbearably so. Our guided tour was excellent and very knowledgeable and we had a beautiful spring day. Every room in the Vatican was breathtaking and magnificent! It was alot to absorb in one day!

Guided tour was just short of brilliant, if you only have a brief history this is a must. I was captured in the awe and some kind of magic. The Vatican building in itself is amazing, huge! Inside to witness the decor of marble and gold... the priceless art everywhere. To be honest, after being there and getting the history... More

We booked a guided tour for the Vatican with Viator Tours and our guide was awesome. He was so excited about sharing as much knowledge about all of the details and he really knew his stuff. He made the information very interesting and told us some funny stories about Michelangelo. The Vatican was extremely crowded, shoulder to shoulder, and without... More

We purchased tickets before going to Rome but when we arrived we were overwhelmed by the fact that our tickets didn't prevent us from waiting in the lines. There were people offering tours and we were a bit skeptical but we decided (since it was a hot day) that we would pay for the tour. They took us back to... More

We went on a 2 1/2 hour guided tour of the Vatican on July 2, 2012, led by Elaine Adams. Elaine did an excellent job guiding and directing the tour. Her energy level and love of history and art really stood out and invigorated the group. She is extremely knowledgeable about the subject matter related to the Vatican and made... More

My wife and I just returned from a wonderful trip to Italy. In planning our trip to Rome, we had hired "Marta marsili <martamarsili@hotmail.com>" as our tour guide to the Vatican. She was great. Her knowledge of art, art history, the Church, and the country was extensive. Her English is excellent. She kept us going for almost 6 hours. The... More

Staying in Trastevere

Neighborhood Profile
Trastevere
Trastevere ("beyond the Tiber") is like a faded postcard, a little worn around the edges but still charming. With its wide-open piazzas, meandering streets, weathered Renaissance buildings, and overgrown personality, it's become an irresistible mecca for visitors. Trastevere is an enclave of entertainment - a rotating set of street performers entertains almost every night, and unforgettable eateries and bars pepper its piazzas and side streets. For a trip to the past, visit the southern and western flanks of Trastevere for pockets of yesteryear, less traversed areas with a residual 1960s and 70s Roman vibe.
