Everybody knows what Pompeii is, but maybe not everybody knows that...: 1.) The best way to get there (assuming you're taking your trip from Naples) is to take the Circumvesuviana local train from the main station (mind, it is a separate establishment, very close to the train station but not the same one) and get off at the Pompei Scavi... more

If you are making your own way then it is easier to get in off the motorway as the entrance is very near the slip road. We tried to get in from Pompei town and just couldn't find the right road! If you are staying 4 hours or less than parking at the site is Euro 2.50 but car parking... more

Mt Vesuvius looms over Pompeii and it certainly gives you a great feeling of awe as you enter the archeological site. The entrance fee is reasonable and the first few exhibits are very good, but it doesn't take long for you to realise how badly kept the place is. Rubbish everywhere, weeds, Graffitti on ancient stone walls and a general... more

Our family went on a tour of Pompeii with Gaetano Manfredi on June 20, 2009. It was definitely one of the best things we did in our three weeks in Europe. We have two teenage daughters and both of them thouroughly enjoyed as well as my wife and I. He made the city come alive. By the end of the... more

We arrived in Naples via the Norweigen Gem cruise ship on June 17. We took a taxi for 10 Euros (family of 4) directly to the Napoli Centrale train station. You really can not walk as the streets to the station were crazy busy and there is not signs telling you which way to go. After purchasing our ticket, validating... more

Fist of all, Pompeii is VAST - much bigger than you think. It offers a fascinating glimpse into a long-gone but still influential civilization not unlike our own, with its cult of the body, obsession with material comforts and violent entertainment. It was a vacation spot for rich Romans - PS: Rome invented vacations. Now the bad news is the... more

You need a hat and lots of water, if you buy anything from the hawkers outside the ruins haggle. The audio guide is useful but not essential if you have a good guide book. You can only get the audio guide at the Porta Marina Gate and you leave your passport as security. We didn't get a guide as we... more

My wife and I spent a day in Pompeii in June 2009 in temperatures of nearly 40 degrees C. There is no escape from the heat on days like that with very little shade. There is nowhere on the site to sit down or to get a drink or a snack, though you can leave and re-enter if you keep... more

Pompei is truly amazing and a lot larger than I'd imagined. It is in my top 10 must see places and I will definitly try to go back but make sure you leave the flip flops at home before hitting these rugged streets & pack the bottled water. This place is truly special and it's not hard to imagine life... more

This was a highlight for me on my trip to Italy. If you are into sightseeing/history/ruins...Pompeii is a great place to see. I could have easily spent two full days wandering through the city, as there is lots to see and explore. Bring comfortable walking shoes.... more
