Visiting the volcano and it's original larger outline gives you a fabulous perspective. We were stunned about how far away Pompeii actually is - and how many new buildings are between ! The climb is u a gravel covered path - it's a 45 minute climb which needs a few rests (pretend you are enjoying the view and wheeze quietly!)... More

The views are spectacular making this is a must do? Check the cloud level before you commit. The crater itself was not that interesting to us. But who cares, the views made up for it. We caught the transfer from opposite the train station at Pompeii. We had a transfer to the Vesuvius park, then a four wheel drive bus... More

Going up vesuvius was probably the best thing we did while staying in Pompei. Avoid all the so called tourist information people in pompei and take the public bus. It takes a little longer but is much cheaper and you can stay as long as you want with a regular service there and back. The unico campania website has all... More

We were covered in cloud, so no views out over Naples and intermittent views into the crater. The 10euro charge has no basis - there is not even a toilet to use at the place. The walk up is steep and loose under foot. The 'free guides' don't materialise. It is very busy with school groups and buses. You should... More

Great trip up Mt Vesuvius - we paid a tour operator 20 euros to take us from Pompeii in a minibus and he waited whilst we climbed to the crater. You pay about 10 euro now to get in and it is a hike up to the crater but well worth the effort. Take water - walking shoes and someone... More

we had been given a lot of friendly advice before going including how long the hike would be and all. BUT we drove almost all the way up. We only had a kilometer to walk when we parked in the lot but it was a hard kilometer so it was a good hike and then we had some good views... More

We travelled from Naples to Ercolano on the Circumvesuviana train from Garibaldi station at a cost of 1.60€ per person. Unsure quite whether we were going to be able to visit Herculaneum and Vesuvius on the same day, and also having small trolley cases, we were quite pleased to find the Vesuvius Express bus office directly outside the station where... Climbed Vesuvius as a part of a great day in Naples. Climbed is the word I am going to use although the first 1000m are done by road. I found mixed information regarding the walk part itself so will hopefully clarify for other travellers. We are a group of four aged 42-50 and averagely fit. The walk took 15-20 minutes... More

After being in awe of Pompeii the previous day, I thought a visit to Mount Vesuvius wouldn't quite measure up. How wrong I was. I hadn't pre-booked, so it was very reassuring to find the tour staff beyond helpful (you will find them and where to book as you turn left out of Pompeii Scavi station). I was leaving Naples...
