We took the train to Ercolano Scavi from Napoli, but did not make it in time for the only early bus, 8:25am. We'd read on here about the mini buses that took you to the car park on the volcano & then said you only have an hour, that is not enough time to savour those wonderful views & take your time for the walk up. If you get off the train at Pompeii scavi buy your bus ticket from the news... more

We drove to the visitor car park well up the volcano. Parking was 4.50 euros. Lots of people and coach parties even though we left it until late afternoon. The site closes at 5.00 - this was May. You can drive to within an 800m walk of the crater of Vesuvius. My 4 year old easily managed the climb and it cost only 6 Euros per adult. The car park is an extra 2 and a half Euros. Views from the top are spectacular. more
