First, I am going to answer the questions that we looked for before the trip - How fit do you need to be? - Its not a long hike, but it is steep. If you take you're time, anyone can do it. In our group of 12 people, 6 people made it to the top (including a couple in their... more

Begrudgingly, we were talked into this trip to the top of Mount Vesuvius by our travel companion, we had purchased the local tourist Arte Card, which included a bus trip to the volcano and free entry, so we met the tourist rep for Arte Card at the Herculaneum Site, where we were driven up the volcano on an open top... more

We took the train to Ercolano Scavi from Napoli, but did not make it in time for the only early bus, 8:25am. There are more frequent buses from Pompeii so that would be a better option if you would like to take the city bus. This is probably a good idea because the only other way to get there apart... more

We'd read on here about the mini buses that took you to the car park on the volcano & then said you only have an hour, that is not enough time to savour those wonderful views & take your time for the walk up. If you get off the train at Pompeii scavi buy your bus ticket from the news... more

If you want to see Vesuvius by yourself (with no organized trip), you will need to take some local bus (either from Pompei or from Ercolano-Scavi). We took a private minibus organized by a local tour operator company located just at the square next to the Circuvesuviana station in Ercolano. The trip cost 16 euro/person, incl. a bus ride and... more

We drove to the visitor car park well up the volcano. Parking was 4.50 euros. Lots of people and coach parties even though we left it until late afternoon. The site closes at 5.00 - this was May. There is a snack place and, of course, lots of gift stands. The climb to the top costs 6 euros for adults... more

Mount Vesuvius is well worth the climb up. You take your car (or public transport) up to the parking lot near the summit, from where it's a fairly steep twenty minute climb to the top. At the top you're rewarded with a fantastic view of the whole area from Naples across the bay, to Pompeii and regions below in the... more

We used the official Vesuvius tourist excursion company ‘Vesuvio Express’ to see Vesuvius. Whilst the volcano was an amazing experience even though the views from the top, across the bay of Naples, were mostly spoilt by low cloud, we were left seething by the appalling customer care by the excursion company. We got to their office in Herculaneum at about... more

Whilst spending a week in Naples, we got the morning train to Herculaneum Scavi station. Just across from the station we purchased a return bus ticket to Mount Vesuvius from a private bus company and we got a charming English speaking guide who pointed out the surrounding sights and gaily chatted to us on our journey to Mount Vesuvius (some... more

You can drive to within an 800m walk of the crater of Vesuvius. My 4 year old easily managed the climb and it cost only 6 Euros per adult. The car park is an extra 2 and a half Euros. Views from the top are spectacular. more
