Winding narrow cobblestoned streets that brings Salerno alive. Very little touristy shops - plenty of small grocery shops selling produce, a nice ceramic shop and filled with friendly people that say hi to you as you walk by. This place makes a nice escape from the tourist hole that is the Amalfi Coast and is a refreshing breeze of fresh... More

This is a very Italian city. A good choice for touring the area. It is on the main train line and has good bus and ferry services.

We loved wandering around the Centro Storico, peering down alleyways and into interesting nooks. This feels like an authentic old quarter and not a tourist trap done up to lure people in. There are no souvenir shops, just the kind of stores that local people use. It seemed to us that you couldn't go wrong walking into almost any of... More

When in Salerno make sure to set aside some time to wander around the old city. The cobblestones and narrow streets hold countless interesting shops, bars and restaurants from hi end to low end. Stroll the small alleys and discover even more interesting shops. A great way to spend a late afternoon

I liked the old historic centre of Salerno very much. There are narrow, tidy and cosy streets reminding me of old good Italian films with Sophia Loren and Marcello Mastroiani. It is like going back to the past, about 50 years ago, when life was still calm and people have time enough for chatting to each other personally.

Salerno is a very busy town with a bustling atmosphere. It is a good place to pass through, but not to stay. Parking is inordinately expensive and the traffic is terrible.

The historic center surpassed all of our expectations: bigger, older, nicer, cheaper and cleaner then we would have expected. Winding cobllestone streets, old frescoes of the Virgin on many walls, an 11th century cathedral (amongst other churches), great buzzling nightlife, relaxed atmosphere... Especially after seeing Naples, you would think things get only dirtier when you go more to the south,but... More

I stayed in Salerno's historical centre for a week in May 2013. It's a much more pleasant place to stay than Amalfi and Positano, which are both overpriced and pretentious, and you can easily get to those places by bus or boat. Salerno's historical centre has numerous unpretentious budget restaurants and an excellent gelateria (L'Isola Fresca in Piazza Sedile di... More

The old centre of Salerno is among the nicest ones around. Everyone knows the region because of Amalfi and other places. but I think the centro storico di salerno is much nicer. Especially in the evening.
