We did a two hour tour of Sasso Caveoso with Antonio. He was very informative and helped us understand what we were seeing. The pace of the tour was really good. Antonio even helped me climb for a better view (and very patiently helped me down again). After a break for lunch he them drove us out for a 'trek'... More

We rarely hire a private guide when traveling, but it seemed like the best way to tackle the maze of Matera and to understand the city and its history. We booked a walking tour of the sassi with Antonio and it was the right decision. Antonio was an excellent guide, extremely knowledgeable and passionate about Matera. His English was excellent.... The Title is not an exaggeration - Antonio had a wonderful way of making the tour highly informative but also feeling like a stroll with an old friend. Not only did he discuss the history but also what is currently happening in Matera, add to that some great restaurant recommendations and spending extra time with us (at no additional cost)... More

Antonia provided an outstanding walking tour of Matera. He had perfect English, was extremely informative, and knew the city and history of Matera very well. He did not rush the walk and provided us with a look at Matera that a person could never get on one's own. He was truly the perfect guide. We felt very fortunate that we... More

The tour by Antonio was was so much more than just a tour. It was an introduction to the history, evolution, development, art and history, infrastructure, architecture and people of Matera from neolithic times until today. It is clear how much Antonio loves Matera and I would venture to say he is probably the most knowledgeable guide for the area.... More

Antonio was fabulous. After the "standard " tour of the Sassi the real treat was he drove us out into the countryside and we hiked about 1/2 mile and he showed us rarely visited caves. One of the caves had a fresco that he discovered 2 years ago.

me and my partner have been to Matera twice, first time was last year 2013. This year we back to Matera again in May. It does not disappoint us, and give us unforgettable memories. This is a ancient place full of caves. Today most of the caves from the old town have renovated and become hotels, or restaurants. Giving us... More

Matera is deservedly a world heritage site, it's cave dwellings are unique and fascinating. I would say it is a tourist 'must'. But you really should hire a guide to do it justice. By yourself it would be very difficult to see the best places and understand what you are seeing. Our guide Antonio was first class; good English, knowledgeable... More

We had pre booked our guide Antonio Manicone (info@materatourguide.it). So glad we did so,he was brilliant. Extremely knowledgeable, amusing and very patient . Fascinating place,a not spoilt by tourists...yet. Well worth having the Antonio explain the history behind how it all began and what the government plans are for its future too. Requires some sensible walking shoes & good hip &... More

We toured the Sassi with Antonio and it was wonderful. Great for kids and adults. He is very knowledgable and passionate about the area and we learned so much with him! One of the highlights of our trip to Italy. I would highly recommend a tour of the Sassi to learn as much as you can about the area and... More
