Worth the climbing and walking. Every corner has a surprise. Must visit the MUSMA museum and sample the food.

This is a gem that is not yet on the tourist trail. When people discover this very old valley in the middle of Matera its popularity will soar. It was a great place to explore and the urge to take another and another photo cannot be controlled.

Old Town, Matera, is a mystical, mysterious and magical place that must be seen to be believed. Immerse yourself in living history and feel the spirits that have lived there for millennia. I want to go back, and so will you!

Matera was the surprise of our ten days tour in south Italy. We started our tour in Positano and drove to Maratea. We didn’t know much about this beautiful old town and its culture. It is in a way out of the classic touristic itinerary. We strongly recommend staying in Matera for 2-3 nights in order to enjoy the unique... More

The city is preparing to bid to be European City of Culture in 2019 - and it shows. The main museum has been extended and its amazing collection redisplayed.

Matera is one of the most beautiful places in this part of Italy. It is known as the oldest continuously occupied human settlement in the world -- that's how long people have been living in the sassi of Matera. One thing not to miss, especially if you go there with a significant other, is to have dinner in the evening... More

What a gorgeous town, it's steep and built into the hillside and faces a gorge full of rupestrian caves. There are a lot of things to see and do in this town. Try to sleep in the Sassi area in a cave.

Matera old town (including Sassi and cave areas) is a jewel. You walk around for hours and discover piazzas, churches, little alleys, ... Unfortunately the new town is not very attractive.
