David was our tour guide and we would highly recommend him. First, he is a warm and engaging fellow, fun to be around no matter what the situation. David has lived in Madrid for ten years and he shared with us why he chose Madrid, how he (originally from Australia) acclimated to the culture not speaking Spanish. From this perspective,... More

My husband and I were in Madrid for the first time and did not plan anything prior to our arrival. I read some reviews online about Joanna and Insider's Madrid and thought I would send her an email a day before we arrived in Madrid. I was shocked to receive a response very late in the evening and in a... More

With less than a week's notice, Joanna put together three different experiences for our family that were all outstanding. First, a walking tour of Madrid with Sean, a native of Madrid whose English was impeccable and knowledge was extensive. We learned so much about the city, including information on architecture and Spanish history, and yet Sean was also very considerate... More

My family and I had a very enjoyable and informative 3 hour private tour with Pablo as a guide - the tour very much helped us get to know this wonderful city. Furthermore Joanna was very helpfull with misc. city advice both before and after the tour. Highly recommendable.

Hi Joanna, I just wanted to send you a message to say a HUGE thank you for your help this weekend. Jane (the Hen) had an amazing time. Christian was a real character – we’re so glad you got him to teach us Flamenco. Carlos and his colleague Miguel were beyond great bar men! They made the whole evening easy... More

It was our first time in Madrid. INSIDERS MADRID came highly recommended by a very reliable source. We were not disappointed. On our first day, we were met by Joanna's associate, Pablo. With a paced walk around the area, Pablo displayed both a detailed knowledge of his fine city and showed care and consideration of his guests (us). When the... More

We are a group of approx. 40 people of 13 different nationalities who hold our global meeting in Madrid once a year. We always have a great time when Insider’s Madrid organise our social and team building activities and Joanna goes the extra mile to show us a side of Madrid we haven’t seen before. Had a great time learning flamenco with Sebastian. In an hour, he took us through the basic moves and by the end we were putting it together into a simple but fun dance routine. Flamenco isn't something you can really learn in an hour, but it was fun to try! And we got to check out a neighborhood full of... More

Thank you Joanna for setting up one of the most memorable touring days my family has as ever experienced. We had one day to spend in Madrid with my family of four- two parents and two daughters 25 and 22. While I was a little nervous about booking a tour guide directly in Spain, Joanna made the whole process very... More

Staying in Lavapies

Neighborhood Profile
Lavapies
Walking into this neighborhood is like entering a different country ... except it's hard to tell which one it is. One side of Calle Lavapiés is lined with Indian restaurants, the other with kebab shops. Men in traditional African clothing convene outside their businesses for long chats, and people shout to each other across plazas and streets. Interspersed among ethnic specialty shops are independent theaters and dance studios, and two large arts and cultural centers — the beautiful Casa Encendida and the Tabacalera, a former tobacco factory — all of which attract young crowds. Along Calle Argumosa, the place to go for drinks, artists and art appreciators with piercings and dreadlocks convene in the street’s eclectic array of young, hip bars. Though some of the side streets can get a little seedy at night, Lavapiés is still the place to go for those seeking a unique blend of arts and culture in an international and funky neighborhood.
