My niece, nephew and I truly enjoyed the Flamenco tour with Joanna. The food, drinks, dancing, music and hostess were great! Joanna's knowledge and love of Flamenco helped us appreciate this wonderful Spanish folk art and culture. Our time with Joanna was memorable and the highlight of our visit to Madrid. She provided us with insider's tips to other places... More

I read a few reviews on whether to go to Botin restaurant and I am glad I did not take it seriously. The biggest attraction of course was Hemingway's presence there. I read a lot of his books in high school. It was absolutely worth if for me because Phil, our guide, gave us a detailed tour before the restaurant... More

This tour is a must!! Every time I visit Madrid I visit this restaurant as I love the food and ambience of this charming place. On my last visit a friend recommended Insider's Madrid and the Botin Experience. I was blown away. I cannot recommend Joanne highly enough. She is a gem, such a lovely lovely lady. The tour was... I highly recommend Insider's Madrid if you are looking for a tour. From my first email to Joanne to the end of our tour with Mayte, the service and experience were the best. We had very little time in Madrid and this tour really showed us all the charm of this beautiful city. Joanne and Mayte were incredibly accommodating since... More

We had a fantastic time on the Botin Experience tour - we had great communication from Joanna before the tour and meal. She was very kind to call the restaurant during to check my friend was ok after she had been pickpocketed earlier in the day.

We took Joanna's Tapas Tour. She let us know that she was unavailable but Heather could take us in her place. She trusts Heather, that combined with some reviews, and we were on our way. First, Heather was fantastic. It amazes me how someone can be so comfortable around people she just met. We went to four restaurants, the food... More

We landed in Madrid and met Joanna a half hour after arriving at our hotel for a 3 hour walking tour. I wasn't worried about being late as she promised to monitor our flight and adjust times if needed. What can you say bad about a tour whose first stop was 3 doors away from our hotel and Joanna treated... More

A wonderful evening with an amazing guide. Joanna is probably the best you can get and her dedication and inspiring approach still puts smiles on our faces. We started the evening with a tapas tour, visiting three places with different types of tapas. Great food and nice settings. After having a final Cava we headed for the Flamenco-show that without... Having Joanna take us on our walking tour definitely brought a new perspective to the way we viewed Madrid. The little alley ways, unique artisan stores, bull fighter's bar right by Plaza Mayor gave us an insight which would not have held any meaning if we had walked right by it. This was a special 4 hours and well worth... More

Joanna is amazing! We started with a get-acquainted walking tour of Madrid and the restaurant Botin. Joanna also helped us make reservations for a dinner at Botin for a few days later. We had an excellent table. The highlight tour, however, was an hour long flamenco lesson for my adult daughter and me. We are not trained dancers, but our... More

Staying in Lavapies

Neighborhood Profile
Lavapies
Walking into this neighborhood is like entering a different country ... except it's hard to tell which one it is. One side of Calle Lavapiés is lined with Indian restaurants, the other with kebab shops. Men in traditional African clothing convene outside their businesses for long chats, and people shout to each other across plazas and streets. Interspersed among ethnic specialty shops are independent theaters and dance studios, and two large arts and cultural centers — the beautiful Casa Encendida and the Tabacalera, a former tobacco factory — all of which attract young crowds. Along Calle Argumosa, the place to go for drinks, artists and art appreciators with piercings and dreadlocks convene in the street’s eclectic array of young, hip bars. Though some of the side streets can get a little seedy at night, Lavapiés is still the place to go for those seeking a unique blend of arts and culture in an international and funky neighborhood.
