Me and my other half travelled to Madrid for a long weekend and decided to take the tour the first night as recommended by other reviews. I really cant rate the experience highly enough, we learned so much from James both historically and practically for our stay. The food and drink was amazing, and very fairly priced, at the end... The tour was fine and the guide was nice but I think I ended up shelling out more than I really should have. Myself, a married couple and the guide comprised the group. After the first stop the couple and I alternated picking up the tab at stops. So I am 25% of those eating. They are 50%, the guide... More

I am trying to work out when you may have joined us? We do operate a pay-as-you-go system in which the tour fee includes the drinks and tapas in the first bar. Thereafter clients pay for what they eat and drink so they can decide whether to splash out or not. We give as a top end guide an estimate... More

We were met by James for this tour on a chilly December Madrid night and were informed that we were actually the only participants because the other party had cancelled and so it was going to be like a private tour. It turned out to be more than a tour, we made a friend in Madrid and immensely enjoyed every... More

It was a fantastic experience to take part in an evening with Mr. Fraser. Even if the guy hat the slight looks of Mr. Goldfinger ( aka Gerd Froebe) he knew it all the way ! We were shown the big spectrum of Tapas and had a lot of fun going on a very professional tour with a guide sharing... More

I cannot recommend this tour highly enough. My wife and I were leaving Spain the next day to continue our honeymoon in chilly Iceland, and we were not certain what to expect. We were blown away! James was incredibly knowledgeable, funny and took our group to sample unique tapas throughout the city for hours. At the end, he showed our... More

Traveling with our twenty something kids- we all had a BLAST! James is great company, very knowledgeable, and took us to the real places in Madrid. Food was very good and things we would not have ordered without his advice and guidance. We would go again if we had more time in Madrid!

Staying in Centro

Neighborhood Profile
Centro
Expansive plazas, local and foreign crowds, street performers, colorful lights, window shopping, restaurant signs promising the best paella, ham, and churros con chocolate- this is downtown Madrid, a collection of plazas interconnected by a network of side streets. Some of these side streets are wide pedestrian shopping routes, and some are hidden, so it's possible to duck in and out of the bustle as desired. The iconic Puerta del Sol is the giant crossroads of the city and a must-see attraction at any time of the day. The nearby Plaza Mayor, completely enclosed by historic red buildings, is an ideal place to grab a bite to eat outside, amidst scores of tables and people out for a stroll. Plaza Isabel II (also known as “Opera”) is smaller and a good meeting spot, and the stately Plaza del Oriente is the front yard of the Royal Palace. Centro can be touristy (pickpockets are unfortuately not unheard-of here), crowded, and sometimes gimmicky, but it is also the place to experience classic Madrid.
