We did Montserrat on our own, without a tour. It's pretty easy to buy a ticket either at a Tourist Information center or at the station itself. It's better to buy beforehand since the combined ticket includes the metro to and from Espanya station. We bought the TransMontserrat ticket, and the TotMontserrat ticket might be worth it if you have... more

We had high expectation of Montserrat but it somewhat fell short of our expectations. It was far from our expectation of a tranquil monastery and everything seemed very commercialised. We didn't see any monks around, only tourists and school excursions, groups after groups after groups. The Basilica is no doubt very nice and grand but somewhat small. Definitely not enough... more

We bought a transport ticket at one of the information centers in barcelona. It included the Metro, train, railway. Caught the 9:30 AM train to the railway up to the Monsastary. Would recommend you pack a lunch. Saw the choir boys at 1PM. They only sign for about 15 minutes. Take the fundicualr up and eat lunch while taking in... more

My friend and I were only going to be in Barcelona for 3 days but from what we had read about Montserrat, we decided that it was definitely a place we wanted to see. We booked a day tour through Pullmantur Tour Company, on-line from the US before we left home. We were not disappointed in our decision. We left... more

After reading a comment somwhere on the internet I felt curious enough to take a look at this mini mountain, not because im religious but for the experience. Looking from the cable car station upwards you would hardly beleive what lays up in the hills but not being the best with arialways i opted to go up by train. The... more

This was one of the highlights of the Barcelona visit and well worth climbing on a bus tour for the day. Montserrat or 'The Serrated Mountain' is home to Santa Maria, one of the most famous black madonnas in the world and to be found up a dramatic thin stairway above the Basilica of the Benedictine monks who live here.... more

I took a day trip from Barcelona to Montserrat. I bought the Transmonserrat ticket, which included the regular train that got you most of the way there and the cremallera (rack and pinion train) which took you up the mountain. Sit in the last car of the cremallera- great views! At the Monastery, I missed the Boy's choir, but did... more

The landscape and scenery at Montserrat were wonderful; the mountain itself is so different than the ones surrounding it. The rocks are smooth rounded pillars keeping guard; it was really quite fantastic! The drive up you won't forget, either (if subject to motion sickness, take your medication at the prescribed time beforehand!). Our guide recommended the honey and cheese concoction... more

Our trip to Montserrat was definitely a highlight of our stay in Barcelona. It´s an easy day-trip from Plaça Espanya. I recommend a combined ticket (several are available at the train station) which gets you on the train, the rack rail, the funiculars, the cable car, and a few Metro rides for about 18 euros. We started with a quick... more
