Beautiful church in traditional Gothic style. It is not super spectacular or unusual, but it is a lovely example of the Gothic style well preserved.

Happened upon the basilica looking for a different church. Very different in scale and layout from other examples in the area. Well worth the visit.

An interesting, if not spectacular, gothic church with an exceptionally wide nave (easier to see since the anarchists in the civil war burned out the decorations). With its multiple very thin pillars it did help me understand some of the inspiration for the Sagrada Familia interior. Pretty stained glass and fun decorations on the door. But for a European gothic... More

This Basilica is hardly mentioned but deserves more attention. I think it is very beautiful. To me it is a typical Catholic church you find in these Southern European areas but has more elaborate artworks than others

located in a quitter area, one must walk to find its location....but once you get there it is a sight to behold. The inside is gracious and usually has a lot of people praying an older church in a middle class environment, near the water as the name implies

For me it is the most beautiful church in Barcelona. Made by seafarers, during their off hours brought the stones of the quarry of Montjuïc to the Born. Imposing Gothic style inside is impressive. The greatness of the church makes us feel small. It is a must visit.

This Basilica feels so very different to many of the other great cathedrals of Spain. Open, spacious, airy...despite its Gothic style. It has survived deliberate attempts at destruction, as recent as 1936 when it was set on fire and burned for 11 days! Make sure you climb the stairs at the east end of the Basilica for a wonderful view back... More

A grand basilica built by the people carries so much more meaning than a grand Cathedral built by the Church or the State. Not as ornate as the Cathedral but beautiful.

Staying in El Born / La Ribera

Neighborhood Profile
El Born / La Ribera
The labyrinth that is El Born becomes most apparent the moment you turn down one of its side streets. But this is one of the few labyrinths you might actually enjoy losing your way in. After all, there are few places that live and breathe such exciting energy regardless of the time of day. This neighborhood seamlessly transcends the old and new parts of the city, reflected in its vast array of restaurants ranging from fancy Michelin-star establishments to trendy fusion restaurants. Here you'll find historical and cultural attractions such as the popular Picasso Museum and the Gothic cathedral La Santa Maria del Mar, where you just might be able to catch a traditional Catalan wedding.
