The town is certainly worth visiting but the peace museum is pretty disappointing. Too little information about the bombing by the Germans and Italians and too much cheesy "peace is good" propaganda. It's probably not politically correct to give a negative review on a peace museum so visit and make up your own mind

Gernika is a village that suffered an extraordinarily cruel bombing in 1937. This town has reinvented and resignified itself as a town for the promotion of peace and reconciliation. This museum is a stunningly well thought out journey starting with concepts of peace from renowned peace studies academics, through historical reconstruction of the bombing in Gernika, to ideas of reconciliation,... We made a point to visit Gernika after hearing about it all our lives, by the grace of Hemingway, Picasso, so many others. I had read up on it once again in Worthington's book, The Basque Country, before my visit to this museum. Among other things, I was fascinated that the Condor Legion, the Nazi air force that bombed Gernika... More

A previous reviewer has much more experience than we have of such exhibits around the world and I take on board much of what was said.I am sure this could be made even more memorable, however as this was our first visit to the Basque Country I did a little research and was horrified how little I knew or understood about... The museum has a wonderful mission: to promote peace in the world. The various exhibits present aspects of this theme. I thought the room that had you experience what happened via an audio experience was very effective, The room with the glass floor showing the rubble of a house was very effective.

Very glad to have stopped here on our way to San Sebastian. Although the captioning beneath the exhibits is in Spanish, we were given a booklet with all the translations in English, as was the moving interactive experience of a Guernica woman who lived through the bombing. I agree with the reviewer who suggested placing this event more within the... More

Went here today and found it free to enter on a Sunday, it was one of the most thought provoking exhibitions I have ever seen. As a bit of a Spanish Civil War boff I knew quite a bit about the bombing of Gernika but the display and the whole experience really brought it home. I will come back and... More

First off, very friendly and helpful staff, able to assist in several languages. The bombing of Gernika is probably more famous for Picasso's painting than the incident itself. But this museum does explain it well, but with respect to the previous poster saying its the most moving museum , I cannot go that far. Its not for instance, on par... More

This museum in the middle of the historical basque city of Guernica it's a must to do experience for anyone that loves history. Well structured and organized , it represents a passioned plead against any war. We were brought to tears on the end of our visit.

We planned a quick stop in Gernika on our way to Bilbao, to pay respects. We didn't expect the extensive museum and commemorative experience. The Peace museum focusses on international events, violation of human rights etc etc- but there is a room set up to replicate the experience of getting ready to head off to market and being - well,...
