You can walk it all and should. Great variety of stores, reasonably priced food and drink. Plan to stay up late; the fun starts around 8pm.

"Genuine" because the tourist shops and artisan boutiques are still few in number. (Hooray!) This is a dark, interesting and may be slightly oppressive/threatening (to some) quarter with long alleyways crowded with shops and bars spilling out the locals in noisy clusters. The squares (if you can find them) come as a huge relief, being open and full of families... More

It has a real 'feel' to it. We were lucky to have locals as guides, but this is the real Bilbao. Perhaps it is also the real Bilbao. Spanish is widely spoken.

It's actually quite difficult to walk around Casco Viejo, because the streets criss-cross each other, and you're likely to either go around in a circle or go too far out and you won't want to turn back. In any case, the streets of the old quarter look pretty similar, full of shops and restaurants. Just like a lot of old... More

The old quarter is wonderful, full of quirky shops and amazing places to eat. Plaza Nueva is a must see and also has lots of good bars and restaurants that cater to all pockets. The market there is also very interesting and you can buy anything from a chicken to old books to tourist nick nacks! The basque museum is... More

The old town contrasts sharply with new Bilbao . . . The other side of the river, and much narrower streets create a different atmosphere. There's definitely a more intimate buzz here, but in truth there aren't that many alleyways to explore and the biggest challenge is finding Plaza Nueva. Considering it's the biggest public space in Casco Viejo, it's... More

We had been on a road trip arriving from Biarritz and San Sebastian. Since Bilbao in general is a quite heavy city with a lot going on the visit to Casco Viejo was the perfect exchange. It has loads of little shops, small good restaurants and the one or 2 attractions to look at. As some people mention here its... More

Very nice to spend time from afternoon until night in this region. so many nice stores sell local foods, pinchos and wine. The ambience are awesome, many tourists and local people enjoying this area for relax or only chit-chat each other. Unforgettable vacation to here.

Dull and a bit scruffy Old Town, much better in other cities around Spain. From our hotel the walk was through a slightly seedy part of Bilbao.
