We stayed in an apartment in the Casco viejo...and you end up having to close the windows so the cigarrate smokes from the restaurants below dont get into your rooms. The streets always seem to be dirty although the City has them cleaning every night!

Full of brilliant pintxos bars at night where there is no need to stay longer than a drink and a couple of pintxos before moving on. There are restaurants as well. During the day, lovely to wander the streets, get lost and find yourself coming back the other way.

Lovely to wander around. Lots to do and see. And eat! Pintxos were fab! Lots of families are around and about which adds to the friendly atmosphere

Among the nicer "old city" areas we have seen. Clean, reasonably open and obviously well cared for. Not completely taken over by tourist shops. There is also a very nice park along the river with several cafes. The Ribera Market is there too but closed the day we were there

Guggenheim wasn't open when we were there but the outside is fantastic. A lovely walk back from the old city by the river in the evening. This city was much better than we expected and well worth a visit.

Just breathing the air around you in the narrow streets of these famous 7 alleys reminisces you of ages back, were it not for the small shops, bars and restaurants enticing one to the delights of contemporary shopping and cuisine. Wander up and down and feel puzzled where to sit down for a bite or stand up for a drink... More

nice to have no big multi-national stores but lots of indepents and cafés and bars. No traffic apart from occasional deliveries early in the day. Plaza Nueva was obviously a local meeting place for locals and visitors to pass their evening. a great atmosphere.

It's a nice old neighborhood with a lot of outdoor cafes where you can sit and have a drink outside, or have some pinchos :) Nothing special - a good place for a nice afternoon out if the weather is sunny.

Coming from San Sebastián we were keen to see how the old towns compared. There were no comparisons! S.S is buzzing, beautiful and carefree. Bilbao's old town is quaint, but that's about it. We were followed for some time by a seedy looking young male. Everywhere we went, he went. Purposely nudged my wife but she kept her bag tight.... More

A labyrinth of small streets, shops and square. An absolute must. Try one of the many pintxos bars and make your way to La Plaza Nueva. On Friday and Saturday night the place is swarming with visitors.
