We wandered through the narrow streets and discovered many interesting stores. It's a good stop for shopping before you take the Feve train nearby. The houses also have beautiful balconies and there is an old church nearby that add interest to this whole place. There is a pastry store that serves a wide selection of pastries and bread. It's a delight to... More

This is the place to immerse yourself in the 'Real' Bilbao rather than the sterile City Centre and it's High Street shopping uniformity. The tight, medieval alleys have a pulse, a buzz and you can absorb the atmosphere in the frenetic bars and stylish restaurants with all walks of colourful Basque life. The independant shop and trendy boutique filled streets are... This Casco Viejo is as impressive as the one in Barcelona, with restaurants, bars and flowery windows surrounding an old religious building. Definitely worth several visits.

We spent New Year here. There are many, varied bars, restaurants, shops and takeaways. The area is historical and pretty. It feels very safe and is cleaned by the city every night. You can wander further on foot or use the excellent transport connections to wider Bilbao. You'll see more walking, though. Bilbao is not geared towards trashy tourist traps.... More

We did a walking tour lead by an excellent guide from the tourism office nearby. We learned a lot. We also frequented many tapas bars and stopped by the indoor market.

The laneways of the old city are captivating with wonderful examples of architecture, history and culture at almost every turn. Make sure you visit after dark, and after 9pm, when the locals come out to socialise and to indulge in some wonderful food and wine. Each laneway has its own group of bars and afficianados so follow the locals to... More

Families with children walk around at night on week-ends, the narrow streets are full of young people having drinks and enjoying themselves without the usual drunken scenes that you see in other cities, children play alone in the streets during the day, restaurants have great, cheap food, and are not tourist traps.

We stayed in apartment right in the heart of the Casco Viejo and felt the slow heartbeat of this lovely place. Take your time to explore the food, buildings, sounds, etc.... You may get lost in the narrow streets for a while but you will love every moment.

Far too many good bars/restaurants to name, great fun trying to find your way around. By far the nicest area of Bilbao and the highlight of our 3 day visit. By the 3rd day we didn't want to be anywhere else and although reluctant to leave this lovely area a 3 day stay is enough. Highly recommend staying at Caravan-Cinema.
