Peaceful Mosel

Just loved the views along the river - lovely trip up into the castle at Cochem. Hard going for my husband who doesn't walk so well but all guides were patient.

First Day we drove the Father Rhein and second day we drove the Mother Mosel. Both are abundant with vineyards and steep great views, but the Mosel seemed more quiet and laid back and more accessible. Some great little towns for lunch, and some great castles as well. It's worth an afternoon drive, but go back to Koblentz for dinner... More

koblenz to trier drifting peacfullly down through a warm breezy balmy atmospherically romantic area( sadly its history was not always thus) Experience the 'black cat ' wine in zell, the fantastic medevil ( and if it isn't it's been rebuilt to taste) architecture of cochem, bernkastel, trier, luxembourg. good food, engaging local people,. imagine opening your curtains to the sight of vineyard... a very nice river. compered to rhine a small river but not less beautiful. of course you have heard about the "Deutsches Eck" where Mosel and the river Rhine flow into each other. A must see!! a beautiful spot with the view on the castle "Festung Ehrenbreitstein" on the top of the hill.

If you visit Zweirad-Wagner in Traben-Trarbach, you can rent bike for 9 Euros per person for the whole day. Also, the owner of the store speaks very good English, so it makes things a little easier. From there, one can easily bike to Bernkastel and back 26 miles or so. There are a bunch of spots along the way to... More

I highly recommend cruising the Moselle. We just came back from. River cruise on the Rhine and Moselle on Avalon. I highly recommend Avalon but also focusing your cruise on the Moselle. It is so beautiful. The history is amazing and seeing the vineyards and the swans and just quietly gliding through the water is the best.

Hard to believe people can work these vineyards. They appear to be vertical! It was interesting to learn how they do work the vines. The scenery along the river is magnificent.

I think it's important to contrast the Mosel with the nearby Rhine River Valley. The Mosel is much narrower than the Rhine. Where the Rhine has trains running on both sides, the Mosel has small (but paved) roads. Also, being wider, the Rhine transports many more shipments of goods on large barges, as well as tourist boats. The Mosel not... More

Our starting point was a Landal camping over Leiwen. You need at least a week to discover all the hidden beauties in the heavenly Mosel wine-valley! The whole river-side area is magical but I would strongly recommend, starting from Trier, to visit the villages Schweich, Leiwen, Neumagen-Dhron, Muellheim, Bernkastel-Kues, Traben-Trabach, Zell and mainly Beilstein and Cochem! All the above are... More
