I stayed in Unterbilk for three months for work, and I can recommend it for many reasons. Firstly, the area has excellent public transport links. Bilk S bahn station/ tram stops (712, 713, 706) also D Bilk - Friedrichstrasse/ D Bilk - Elizabethstrasse tram stops (707, 708) connect the area to most of the rest of the city quite easily...
