If you're looking for a condensed overview of the art of painting from medevial to contemporary, Wallraf-Richartz Museum is you first address. Follow the given trail and the centuries and schools are presented to you along the timeline, with both paintings and circumstances well described. And all this in the very town centre, opposite to the historic Town Hall, between... More

We only had time to visit one museum in Cologne, and with some uncertainty chose the Wallraf-Richartz. Located about 3 blocks from the Cathedral, the Museum houses one of the most impressive displays of medieval art I've come across anywhere! (Their website doesn't do the museum justice.) Well-preserved and skilfully lit and displayed, the colours and images appear with a... More

I really enjoyed taking time to visit this small museum. Only three floors, but a great variety of artwork. I truly enjoyed the visit. I am not an art expert, but the museum arranges many of the exhibits in chronological order of an event, which is quite interesting. A small cafe is located in the museum as well and makes... More

If I was limited to one museum in Cologne, this would be it. A simply extraordinary collection from medieval through Expressionists. If you love paintings, you will be enriched. More

Not the best Art Gallery in Europe but worth to visit. 3 collections organized in 3 levels in a, as usual, amazing building, dowtown Cologne, fact that makes more suprising this city. Nobody could improve the set up of the city center. Very interesting places (Ludwig Museum, Philarmonia, Wallraf Museum in an environnment which is not always helpin. In relation... More

The collection is wonderful and beginning on the top floor was a good way to have plenty of energy for the Impressionists. As an art museum, the display commentary was very unusual - lots of theoretical commentary as opposed to the standard verbiage about art techniques and subjects. At times the commentary was annoying, but it was definitely interesting to... More

The museum displayed much of its hidden basement collection including fakes which was very interesting. It helped me understand fashion in painting - the rest of the museum was a good collection of impressionism etc More

I've gone here twice, and have no idea why the reviews below are so glowing - or so identically-phrased. The first time, when I walked in the guard pointed at my very small camera bag and said something to the coat check man. I should have just left then and there - he had the look of a little man... This is the principal painting (and a little sculpture ...) museum in Cologne. It's a modern building, with a full view of the cathedral and a superb view (in 2011) of the Judengasse archaeological excavation beside the Town Hall. I used my Cologne Museum Card for admission, which is normally 8.5 Euros. The collection is very good, running from the... More
