Schweriner Schloss has had a long, eventful and varied history. The present palace dates back from the mid-19th century when a certain duke had enough dislike with the buildings' incongruent origin and style that he decided to remodel the palace but was halted by his successor who wanted a complete reconstruction of the palace - some parts of the older... We opted to see Schwerin Castle instead of taking the 3 hour train ride to Berlin on our cruise ship stop in Warnemuende. The castle was gorgeous on the outside with a beautiful lake surrounding it. Take the time to walk around the castle and see the grounds, there are lovely little bridges and grottos around the lake with swans.... More

Traveled to Schwerin in 1991. Not isolated like Neuschwanstein and more picturesque. The gardens, lakes are just out of a fairy tale. Taking my wife and three kids in august. My favorite castles Schwerin and Oberwesel castle(you can sleep in oberwesel). Some what off the beaten path. Not the tourist trap that Ludwigs house is.

The best features of Schwerin is probably the walk up to it and the fact that being a smaller, remote attraction, there tends to be less tourists around. We took the train to / from Warnemunde (26 Euros return for 2 people on a Sunday--each additional person is 4 Euros). It was very easy to get there on our own... More

It is a pretty picturesque castle. Recently renovated. It is in amazing condition. There are great picture shots outside for a fantastic view. The gardens are wonderful.

We visited Schwerin Castle as part of an organized tour, and it was certainly the highlight of our day. The castle is situated on a tiny island in a serene, picture-postcard-perfect lake--emphasized by swans, weeping willow trees, and gorgeous flowers. It may be a "young" castle but its setting is something out of a fairy tale. We had perfect weather... More

Castle was constructed just over 100 years ago, making it a very young castle. The construction of the building is impressive. A fee of 3 euro applies if you want to take photos. Staff are super pedantic about this, I had been asked about 3 times where my sticker was. You can walk around freely at your own pace inside,... More

I first visited Schwerin 32 years ago when it was still part of the old DDR and "the wall" was still in place. At that time the beautiful Schloss was almost black with the grime of years and with broken window panes and no garden that I can remember. You could get no nearer than the wrong end of the... More

Not really a castle in the traditional sense but a nice way to spend a couple of hours. Would be nice if you got to see more of the building. The museum is restricted to one side. The grounds are good to walk around.

This was a very nice tour; there are a lot of interesting things in the castle. It is not as well-furnished as some of the others throughout Europe, but it's worth a visit.
