Although looking imposing and well-preserved it does not produce a feeling of authenticity. Rather it looks like a "new old" castle and recently I learnt that it was indeed reconstructed in the 19th century. It has a nice little museum (to your right at the entrance) which houses the original statue of the lion a copy of which is standing... More

Dankwarderode castle (or Burg) is at the heart of Brunswick (Braunschweig), in the castle square (Burgplatz). The square has other historic buildings and the castle is part of the city-run museum.
