A lake just in the center of the town! YES! Do a bike or jogging around, do Stand-Up-Paddeling, rent a sailing or rowing boat, do stop AT BODOs BOOTSSTEG and CLIFF for great food.... lay on the ALSERWIESE with a great book, take your picknick....

The Alster (binnen and aussen [inner and outeer] lakes in the middle of Hamburg are a godsend if you get tired of shopping in Mönckebergstraße street.

I only saw these from the banks as I didn't have time to take the boat trip but none the less they are very impressive. I've ticked 'no fee for this attraction' but obviously if you take the boat there is! I was amazed at how big they are right in the middle of the city. It was a lovely... More

Great 1 hour boat trip on the cosy steam boat but unfortunately the entire commentary was in German, so we had no clue what any of the sights were. The ships captain did talk extensively for most of the trip, so we figured there was lots to know! The value of the trip was depleted because of this.

Recommended to walk around to get a sense of the scale of the lakes. Lovely views of the grand buildings on the banks. At dusk when they are lit up its quite spectacular. In summer take advantage of the walk around both lakes, grabbing an ice cream or a beer on route.

It's worth taking a boat ride around lake Alster, make sure you use one of the headset so know what the guide is saying.

You can take a cruise from the banks of the lake around for around one hour which takes you in a cruise around the lake. The cruise captain plays the role of guide and tells the history of the bulidings on the lake

We enjoyed good weather and found the round trip to be scenic and relaxing. Impressive residential buildings all around the shores.

Hamburg has a lot of water- rivers, canals and lakes. The Alster extends from the city centre northwards and is bordered by beautiful gardens and properties. It is well worth a trip to see the city from a different perspective.
