A wonderful lake with cafes and bars around the edge. We had a lovely stroll from the centre to the hotel, stopping on the way for a beer in the twilight at a small lakeside bar. There were quite a lot of people around doing the same in the twilight. Be aware that push bikes travel at speed on the... More

We happen to chance upon this lake and the fountain that looks like the Jet d'Eau in Geneva. Nice place and it is just a short stroll from Hamburg Town Hall (a few minutes walk). Lovely to just sit here and relax.

It was a beautiful Sunday in summer when we visited this part of Hamburg. It's really exciting! That beautiful mass of water, surrounded by trees, paths for walking, biking, many options of water sports, etc. There are also bars, restaurants and space for picnic. Can you think of a better place to spend a summer day?

This is a beautiful area of Hamburg. To relax by the seaside with a nice refreshment and still be in the heart of Hamburg is purely magic. Try it!

The best part of the lake is the swans and the fascinating story of their origin in the Alster Lakes and their ongoing upkeep. Spoiler alert, the profession of "Swan Father" still exists in Hamburg today.

You can take organised boat rides from here which are a little expensive but as you are in the city you don't have to go out of your way to enjoy, you can apparently walk all the way around but I'd think that that would take some time. Lots of people sit and stare out towards the fountain taking their... More

We spent a morning walking around the lake (accessible for those with buggies - may need to cycle for those who don't want to walk) before getting the best icecream from the eis hut next to Alex's bar. A lovely walk, great to see the grand buildings of hamburg and a definite contrast to the likes of st pauli. Be... More

You do not need to do anything at Alster lakes. It is a great place for a picnic and just people and boat watch. It is big enough that you can always find a quiet spot. Good place to chill out. Obviously more crowded at the weekends.
