While there are many excursions to take and many choices of ship, I chose the on/off excursion from pier 11, as I wanted to stop off at the research center that has records and helpful staff to track relatives who sailed from German ports to New York. Ballinstadt proved to be one of the highlights of my trip.

A good tour round these huge and most impressive docks, but why, oh why, no brief summaries in English? It is the international business language. The tourist bus does it well with 85% in German and 15% in English. That's enough.

As a native Hamburger I tell you there is no place like this harbour area. Even the transformation from a historic harbour to the most modern container terminal harbour has not effected the charme of this area. It is like two sides of the same medal "harbour" and provides tons of impressions of gone by and actual harbour life.

I loved this excursion. Strongly recommend it. Only minus, guided excursions in foreign languages during wintertime would be REALLY appreciated. Would like to take this excursion again during summer with my system camera, some of the views would make stunning pics.

The port itself, and the surrounding area/buildings, are quite unique. Major cruise ships dock here. Lots of excellent seafood restaurants and funky stores.

I could have spent a weekend just there because there is just so much to see from the Mini trains to all the history that's in that area plus the big boats that were there, Cpn San Digo plus the H.M.S Tyme was in town Plus we went to a Norweigan Christmas fare and won two prizes.

We were treated to arriving on a foggy night where the tall masted ship was eeriely lit up and a street entertainer played the theme tune to The Godfather with the BlocBrau to our right. Pretty cool. I daylight we did a boat trip around the harbour. Admittedly we could have waited for an English translation tour but did the... More
