Neighborhood: Charlottenburg
Breathe in Berlin’s royal past while walking through the gardens of beautiful Charlottenburg Palace, which lends its name to this well-heeled neighborhood. Here you'll find some of the oldest homes in the city: upper-class apartment buildings with ornate facades and marble-floored foyers line the cobblestone streets. Stroll by sophisticated restaurants, through little parks, or around Lake Lietzensee. Window shop down Kurfürstendamm, the most renowned high-end shopping street in Berlin, where you can find all the big designer names. In the evening, visit one of the old theaters close by Zoo Station which were nightlife hot spots in the 1920s, or dine in one of the many international restaurants around Savignyplatz before heading to other parts of town for a night out.

Interesting little town square with greenery, benches, pergolas, some artwork, ideal to sit and rest, enjoy a breather after exploring Zoo and Breitscheidplatz. There are some decent eateries all around, as well as some interesting shopping experience below the elevated train tracks. Just a little bit off the beaten path. Nice stop.

Areas like this are fast disappearing in Berlin. Go to the lovely restaurants around the area or walk down Kant Strasse to the Kant Cafe. This is as authentic as it gets and so beautiful in the Spring/Summer.

There are many niche neighbourhoods in Berlin for historical reasons and so on, but Savignyplatz in Charlottenburg can provide a traveller with every needs. Affordable rental apartments or b&bs - yes. Quiet neighbourhood streets - yes. Opticians for reading glasses - yes. Cinemas - yes. Public transportation: S-bahn, U-bahn, bus - yes. Taxi stand - yes. Laundry - drycleaning and wash only - yes, at Picobello Knesebeckstrasse 86 (6 days a week and friendly service). Apotheke (drugstore) - yes. Grocery stores - yes. Boutiques - yes. Bookstores - yes. Currywurst stand - yes. And drinking bar - Hefner! - yes. Not to mention numerous restaurants. And posh K'damm and Fasanenstrasse just 5 minutes away for North-American style shopping.
Take time to walk around the neighbourhood - Kantstrasse is not all haute cuisine and furniture stores, but also Vietnamese noodle shops and Chinese takeouts. Some streets remind the visitors of post-war Berlin without the adornments: grey functional blocks. Day trips are only an S-bahn away - to Charlottenburg and its grounds, to the Olympic stadium and the surrounding woods, to Hauptbahnhof to take the train to Potsdam or Leipzig or Magdeburg .. endless possibilities.
In winter, the park is of course bare. But in the spring and summer - wonderful.

Split by Kant Strasse, this square has been a wonderful relaxing place to visit for years (I first used it in 1987); full of good quality bars and places to eat day and night.

Dicke Wirtin (fat landlady) is a wonderful bar, as is the late closing Zwiebelfisch (onionfish). Less than 100 metre down Kant Strasse is the very popular Schwarzes Cafe, another late night bar, but this one is for the younger brigade.

The two Italian (with Greek undertones) next to each other are both great value and good restuarants in their own right, there are other places around the Platz also, just take your pick.

This is a wonderful district of Berlin that is absolutely brilliant to visit.
We are in Berlin every August for the fabulous Berlin Beer Festival ( Biermeille) and we always end up here with its great array of pubs, bars and restaurants and interesting architecture.
Jumping the Sbahn, S 5.7.75 to stop Berlin Savignyplatz this brings you into this amazing area and your only a stones throw away from Kurfurstendamm so another great reason to visit.

We loved this area, much less touristy. The square was beautiful, some shops around and the cafes and restaurants were mixed cuisine, Spanish, Italian, Turkish - to name a few

This was just down the road from our hotel and we were so glad it was as otherwise we may never have gone. It is really lovely, sitting outside watching people go by, looking beautiful buildings with good food. If I lived near here I'd never stop realising the beauty of the place. We ate at Dicke Wirtin, La Piazza, San Marino and Petrocellis, all of which I have reviewed. There is a nice bar on the second road away from Dicke Wirtin called amiras or amoras. Fabulous cocktails, really cheap and the Turkish coffee was heavenly.

We spent time here while on a short city break. It is a nice neighbourhood with bars and restaurants and appeals to tourists and local people. It is not an upmarket area so don't expect too much but prices are reasonable and the atmosphere is pleasant. There is easy access to public transport.

As well as having a train station in its heart, there are plenty of restaurants, cafes and bars along its streets. We found a particularly excellent one called "Mey" (reviewed under restaurants). The whole atmosphere in the area is very relaxing.
