It's 20 years since I last visited, and I remember the collection was great but the space was pokey. The new extension, which wraps its golden box round the old, has solved that, and the special exhibition area is over the road. accessed through a Ubahn station. I only wish I could have had longer there.

Check online for the excellent special exhibits. Otherwise, here's where you'll find alll the Blaue Reiter and Abstract Expressionists in a lovely mansion. Recently renovated to improve the reception area and add a nice cafe.

This is a wonderful museum with exhibitions from the Blue Rider group of artists including several works of W. Kandinsky, mostly from his stay in Munich. I found the modern exhibitions of the museum less interesting, but overall the experience was very good. The visit included the access to the temporary gallery of the local artists A. Macke and F.... This is a very interesting place if you like modern art. You meet the famous painters of ' The blue rider - der blauwe reiter ' . There is a lot to read, also in English. For us, this museum was a real highlight during our visit to Münich ( 2 days ). Strongly recommended if you like modern painting... More

The collection of German art from the 19th and 20th centuries is outstanding, and the newly renovated museum provides a perfect setting. In addition to iconic works from the Blue Rider group and the New Objectivity movement, another highlight is the 19th century collection. Be sure to leave enough time to visit the special exhibitions, the historic rooms of the... More

The Foster extension gives this a seriously impactful entrance but the original building itself is really spectacular. If you're keen on seeing some Blue Rider art (Der Blaue Reiter) then it cannot get better than this. There are lots of other bits and pieces to see in the museum which unfortunately we barely had time to see but the collection... More

Recently enlarged and refurbished, this is a "must see" for anyone interested in art. It is one of those buildings where there is more to see than appears the case from outside, and has a primary focus of showing the work of artists associated with Munich from the 19th century onwards. Norman Foster's new extension encases the original building and... More

While it has excellent compact sections on recent art - including a vibrantly happy Sol Lewitt room, and the ubiquitously clunky pieces of Beuys - and on 20s German art, the attraction here is the outstanding collection of works from artists of the Blue Rider group. Dominated by Kandinsky, but also significant pieces by Munter, Klee, Marc, Jawlensky and other... More
