This is the center of Old Munchen. Make sure you go up in the tower of the Old Town Hall - if you go to the elevator immediately after the Glockenspiel does its chiming dance (1100, 1200, and 1700 daily), you will avoid any queue - great 360 city views!

In August this is extremely busy but it is a great central point and is also where the tourist information centre is situated. Eating and drinking in Marienplatz is expensive but there are many reasonably priced places to eat / drink down side streets off Marienplatz. The Glockenspiel on the town hall is well worth watching at 11am!

It's difficult, almost impossible, to believe that 80% of Munich was reduced to rubble as a consequence of the American bombing in the latter stages of WWII, such is the excellence of the reformation work in the mid and late 20th century. Marienplatz is the centre of the Munich 'universe' and starting point for the many city walking tours that... More

Energetic and lively area with many, many shops and sites to take in. We had 4 nights in Munch and had a couple of opportunities to venture into Marienplatz. The architecture is stunning and makes for a nice place to stroll both during the day or night.

No cars so great to wander around & absorb the ambience. The Rathouse (town hall) is a must see. So ornate. Make sure you walk on to the Viktualien Market which is a gastronom's heaven & a lot of fun. Delicious offerings. Good prices.

Beautiful buildings, including the Town Hall (Rathaus) where, incredibly, has a small area for having beers at it's center. The church is a wonderful sight, and the climate really good. Beerhouses everywhere. We even lost a camera, and after 1 hour around, noticed and went back, the helpful staff was very kind, and had kept it for us. Very nice... More

The word famous glockenspiel is here and the characters come to life 2 or 3 times a day. across the street you can pay a few euros and go up and watch from above and get a better view of the glockenspiel and all of munich. to die for views but not for the faint of heart. Quite a climb.

Visited Munich over three days in July 2012. Marienplatz was where we headed to begin acclimating to the city. The famous Hofbrauhaus (pass, it's way overrated, or just pop in for a litre - the Hackerhaus, also nearby, was vastly superior, both for food and beer) is five minutes walk, the church is around the corner, and there are musicians... Make sure you see the Glockenspiel in the tower! I believe it performs 2 or 3 x a day. We caught it at 5 pm. The area is blocked off to traffic, so you can safely walk and enjoy the various shops and vendors. We especially enjoyed the fresh fruit stands- amazing raspberries, strawberries and nectarines. (the fruit was a... More
