In Oberammergau, as part of a GCT tour, on our free time, we visited the Pilatushaus which features some amazing wood carvings. Ad mission is free and it opens at 1:00 PM each day. There is usually an artist doing some carving or painting. It is worth a short visit.

Great place to visit! Entrance is free, and you get to see the woodworkers carve different things. There is a beautiful garden outside, and a gift shop in the store with works created by local carvers. Worth seeing!!!

The outside of the building, with its ornate 3-d painting work is a fascinating view. Inside, the artists were busy spinning tops, carving wood or painting. It was fun to watch them create a piece of art right in front of you, but it gave me an unsettled feeling like I was expected to buy one of their works. That... More

we visited on a very quiet, but hot, afternoon. There were numerous examples of local artistic skills, but the 'stand out' element was upstairs where you can see examples of reverse glass painting. I have seen this art before but had no idea how it was done until I visited the Pilatushaus.

Fantasic murals outside and a lovely garden to sit in and admire and just have a rest in. Also watched a wood carver for a while, I'm not sure if the reverse painted glass is anything particularly special as I've seen some fine examples elsewhere in europe., but interesting upstairs to see the old room heater come cooker.

The artwork is amazing on this house. Definitely worth a look. Also look out for Red Riding Hood house and Hansel and Gretel house.

I stopped in here to see a woodcarving demonstration and was asked to come back the next day. When I did, he gave me a DVD of a German news story done on his technique. I use this in my classroom. Many talented artists can be found here.

The outside of this building is beautiful and the maze garden at the front is pretty covered in snow. Inside you can admire so of the local artist carving objects. Upstairs is a collection of wood carving from nativity scenes to wood toys. We had this included in the ticket of the passion play theatre backstage tour, but I believe... More

Sadly this was closed on Monday. We could only enjoy the area from the outside. The gardens were very lovely and well kept. We would have loved ton see the carvers.
