The medieval water drains of this city are better enjoyed while listening to a local guide. You can stroll around the city inner core, follow the bachle and hear very nice old stories about the city and the use it's citizens make of this drains during the summer.

You will encounter the bachle upon a stroll through the old town, and while being careful not to fall in, they give a real identity to Freiburg.

Not at all sure that they can be described as an attraction, but they are pretty unique I suppose. Really need to be aware of them when wandering the streets, any unexpected distraction could result in a fall. Good to see something different, though.

Read about these little water channels before my visit to Freiburg then forgot all about them till I saw them all over the town. Part of the history but could also be a hazard to the unwary pedestrian

One of the unique features of the city of Freiburg are the Bachle. A leftover from the old ages, the Bachle are nothing more then very clean ditches that carries water throughout the city. A rather lengthy tripping hazard, the summer time reveals alternative use for these ditches. An impromptu playground for pets and children, the Bachle can be a... More

I don't know how these drains got listed as an attraction. I found them more of a hazard. However we did see one dog that couldn't keep out of them, so I suppose he found them attractive.

The Bächle are generally small shallow gutters that run throughout Freiburg im Breisgau (Germany), carrying water from the Dreisam river. They are a great asset to the city in summer, providing a play thing for children, a cool place to stick ones hot feet after shopping or while drinking a beer and an often used as impromptu dog baths. They... More

This is the most underwhelming "point of interest" I've ever seen!! It's just a drain system that runs through the old city. Sure, I get that it's historic, but not the kind of thing anyone would take photos of and write home about.

The so called "Bachle" are little water canals that run through the entire city centre. Originally, they were built to get strong smells and wastewater out of the city. Today, they create a wonderful atmosphere and a nice offer in summer to keep your feet cool :)
