The first documented mention of the Bächle dates back to the year 1220 when Count Egon I of Freiburg gave the Tennenbacherhof monastery permission to use a field which was irrigated by a Bächle. Unlike in many other settlements this was not done to protect against floods since the riverbed of the Dreisam is significantly lower than the city. It... More

These gulleys run all over the Old Town streets - draining (I think) into larger canals, such as the Fischerau - a fast-flowing 'stream' which I think might have been a fish farming watercourse in older times. The old buildings back onto this water course, part original/restored, part rebuilt and face small 14th century houses which are now boutiques and... More

Very strange sight in Freiburg is the water flowing in small channels in the street (Bachle). Nice in summer, but there to get you if you had one too many German Biers ,,,,

The Bächle was in the Central of the City and in the Summer you see the People with their Feed inside, Children are playing with the water.

These are a charming feature of the old part of Freiburg. I've heard many explanations for their existence, but still have no idea their exact purpose. I've seen them in a few other smaller, older cities in Germany and hope to someday know their purpose

You will find the Bächle all over the old town. They were built in order to help the citizens extinguishing fire in their houses, when they were still wooden constructions. Unfortunately they were almost dry when we visited the city.

These waterways and their original usage has been well described by others, as has the local folklore that if you fall in one you will finish up marrying someone from Freiburg. Although not really an attraction to search out as you really cannot miss them when you walk round the central streets of this town they do add a bit... More

These really iconic little streams provide endless amusement for children with little sail boats on strings. Just watch your step though!

The Baechle are the essence of the city's charm, and they play a fun role in Freiburg's folklore. I spent a year studying here, have returned several times, and if legend proves true I'll return some day to marry a Freiburger.

Once we arrived in Freiburg we were fascinated by the many small gutters with clear water alongside the streets. They were everywhere in the Old Town! This is quite unique! Never have I seen these in other cities. It gave character in the streets. They vary in size from street to street, from 30 centimeters to a meter. Most of... More
