One of the unique features of the city of Freiburg are the Bachle. A leftover from the old ages, the Bachle are nothing more then very clean ditches that carries water throughout the city. A rather lengthy tripping hazard, the summer time reveals alternative use for these ditches. An impromptu playground for pets and children, the Bachle can be a... More

I don't know how these drains got listed as an attraction. I found them more of a hazard. However we did see one dog that couldn't keep out of them, so I suppose he found them attractive.

The Bächle are generally small shallow gutters that run throughout Freiburg im Breisgau (Germany), carrying water from the Dreisam river. They are a great asset to the city in summer, providing a play thing for children, a cool place to stick ones hot feet after shopping or while drinking a beer and an often used as impromptu dog baths. They... More

This is the most underwhelming "point of interest" I've ever seen!! It's just a drain system that runs through the old city. Sure, I get that it's historic, but not the kind of thing anyone would take photos of and write home about.

The so called "Bachle" are little water canals that run through the entire city centre. Originally, they were built to get strong smells and wastewater out of the city. Today, they create a wonderful atmosphere and a nice offer in summer to keep your feet cool :)

Freiburgs "Bächle" (small rivers) are a must see. But be carefull, if you step in on of the Bächle you have to marry a person from Freiburg ;)

They are just water canals in the very heart of the city. They used to be used in the past to water plants, put out fires and water their animals. Now they are not needed, but they create a beautiful sound when walking downtown. Lots of people use it to refresh their feet during summer.

Hot temperatures (+35 Celsius) are usually not the best set-up for making city trips or longer walks. In Freiburg its different: Those little "rivers" in the cities kept our kids occupied for many hours letting us parents do some shopping, sight seeing etc. We also bought some small hand-made wooden boots that they would let run down the "Baechles" .... Have never seen these before, but on a hot day they were very welcome. They are little (very clean) gutters along each street with water flowing along. The water was crystal clear and although not recommended to drink I'd certainly recommend a paddle on a hot day.

Not many places have these little rivulets running along the streets. Much nicer than gutters - clean for a start. People refresh their feet in these on a hot day and what small child is not going to enjoy a little bachleboot on a string?
