Though they seem easy to find, you have to watch closely for the discrete signs that identify the traboules. We happened across one not far from the Museum of Miniatures/Cinema and found it fascinating. These enclosures make you think of ancient Rome and help you realize how important the silk trade was to France centuries ago, that they would develop... More

It is amazing what you find at the back of a door that looks as though it should just be a house!! To open the door press the button next to the street front door. Not all are open to the public. We walked through one from Rue Boeuf to Rue St John. We were surprised at how long this "traboule"... More

TRABOULES are fascinating and misterious ground passage through building from one street to another. These are architectural treasures, which were used even in the secon war by the locals,by the partisans-maquis,by the RESISTANCE.

A traboule is a ground-floor passage through buildings from one street to another. The ones in Lyon are sometimes centuries old and laden with atmosphere. The ones in St Jean are particularly interesting. Please do not talk loudly in them, though, as people do live above them.

A treasure hunt, never could tell when one would be open. Some are little more than places with mailboxes and trash cans, but others, private gardens, secluded balconies, thousands of year old corridors leading to the river. Be nice and polite these are peoples private areas they are being nice and sharing with you. If you have a chance to... More

While walking around the vieux Lyon, look closely at the doors. If there is a sign telling visitors not to disturb people living there, just push open the door and walk in. You have a good chance it is a traboule, which will guide you inside an old building, and often across to another street. Please stay silent! Note: you... More

Lyon is the gastronomical capital of the world filled with history from Roman times, to early Renaissance through the Resistance in WWII. If you are a true foodie/gourmet or gourmand, you'll love Lyon. I've visited Lyon twice in the last 5 years. Lyon is an incredible journey into French culture and with major Eurail transit from Paris, it is so... More

The man who we rented our flat from told us about the traboules and gave us the advice on which ones to visit at what times. Some are just beautiful.

We took an English guide tour of the traboules with Lyon tourist office. Was only a couple of hours and was very cold day, but it was really interesting (even our teenage children enjoyed it!)

We visited a few of these Traboules during a city tour. We would have loved to do the Traboules tour however they weren't running during our stay.
