Most athletes climb the Fourvière hill to look at Lyon from the Basilica, a symbolic site of the tradition on 8 December. An alternative for the less physically fit is to take the funicular that connects the Old Lyon Fourvière from the base of Vieux Lyon to the top of the hill.

GREAT WAY TO SPEND 30 to 60 MINUTES! This is the best place from which you can see the city of Lyon. You can see both rivers, and all of the attractions, buildings, hotels, locations, etc. It is located on top of a hill next to a Basilique, and it is FREE! There are also viewing telescopes you can use,... More

The park itself is free and open to the public. You can amble among the ruins as you please! The view is also excellent, and you can see the basilica from here, as well as the city, so it might be better than the view from the basilica. They don't have many signs telling you what you are looking at,... More

Spent good time walking around the Roman amphitheatre ruins - it is worth making the effort to get there. The site is still used for some performances and is an impressive look into the past. Free entry to the site. Carry on up the hill to the Basilica also, and enjoy the fabulous views.

Great view of the city from here. Either walk up or take the funicular up from the station near the Jean cathedral.

The views from the top of the hill are brilliant, the whole of Lyon and it's surrounding are in front of you. It is definitely one of the best things to do while in Lyon. Also, while up at Fourviere, you can visit the Cathedral and the Roman amphitheaters. The walk up the road is steep, so it's a good... More

The hike up was a little tough but the view was worth it! It was a tough walk but with all the restaurants it made it worth it to work off all the great food!

We took the funicular up and the stairs down. Our Australian relatives took the stairs both ways. Enjoyable walk down, through trees etc. The view from the top is magnificent. We were there on a particularly blustering and chilly day, so didn't linger. Will go back if weather and time permits and look around a bit more. All I can... More

If you like walking, this is worth it. We walked along the River Saon and then up the hill. I believe there is public transport but we did not use it. Fabulous view, historic areas and the interesting traboules. A good walk down through a different area of Lyon.
